Senior Project Risk Specialist in Birmingham

Arup's project risk management team has considerable experience of helping our clients understand and manage risks to which they are exposed on large capital investment projects across a variety of industry sectors, including energy (generation and distribution/transmission), water and transport infrastructure (highways, rail and airports). We work with a variety of client types, including government agencies, local authorities, developers, investors, senior lenders, regulators, contractors and operators. We provide advice at all project lifecycle stages, making reliable contributions to feasibility studies, optioneering, business cases, design development, procurement structuring, tender evaluation, contract management and operational readiness.

• Managing any affordability challenges they may have and their significant (e.g. cost, schedule, revenue and reputational) risks in accordance with their own organisation's risk appetite.
• Meeting their regulatory, industry and/or own compliance requirements, their developing risk management awareness and capability.
• Safeguarding and/or enhancing their reputation for major project development and delivery.
• The accuracy of risk products for reliable decision-making.

You will be a risk management practitioner who puts the client at the centre of your efforts. This includes being proactive in building relationships with your client and identifying, not only their programme or project needs, but others that Arup can address through other advisory or engineering disciplines. You will have delivery as well as business development responsibilities.

You will report to the PRM business leader and will carry out the following activities:

• Providing PRM advice to internal and external clients in a variety of market sectors at different lifecycle stages, including:
• Assessing risk (e.g. CAPEX, OPEX, schedule, revenue and reputation) qualitatively and semi-quantitatively.
• Quantifying CAPEX & schedule risk exposure using different methods (e.g. Monte Carlo sampling, reference class forecasting).
• Reporting and advising on risk exposure and risk response plans and facilitating risk workshops and applying other risk identification techniques.

You will manage PRM commissions with minimal supervision from the PRM team leader and work closely with internal project teams (especially project managers, technical discipline leaders, planners and quantity surveyors) to recommend and provide PRM support. You will also continually review how we could improve our service offering by (a) reviewing how PRM is practised by others, (b) monitoring PRM developments in the marketplace, and (c) acting on lessons we learn when delivering our PRM service.

We are looking for a professional who is curious about client business and excited to draw on the diversity of Arup's skills to meet client needs. You will have demonstrable experience in client relationship and business development. A sound understanding of risk management on energy and transport infrastructure projects is preferred. In addition, you will:

• Have risk management experience including:
• Practising risk quantification using recognised techniques, developing and embedding risk assurance and governance frameworks, cost-effective risk response planning and making contributions to different project lifecycle stages.

You will have a background in working with different client types (e.g. operators, developers, contractors, investors, central government departments, local authorities) and be able to build a network of contacts internally and externally to prospect and develop leads for fee-paying work.

Have an awareness of risk management innovations, developing best practice and emerging markets/industry trends.

Have a degree in a relevant field and either a chartered professional, or keen to become chartered.
