Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We work with clients to plan, build, integrate and maintain a wide variety of civil infrastructure, from bridges to reservoirs, from metro tunnels to off‑shore wind farms. Our technical teams address every aspect of civil engineering design, working with the full breadth of Arup’s other disciplines.

We're looking for talented Civil Engineers at mid and senior levels to join our Energy, Water and Site Development teams across Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Nottingham. Whether you’re ready to lead projects or further develop your expertise, you’ll be part of a supportive, collaborative environment where your ideas, experience and unique perspective truly matter.

In water you will help major frameworks with water utility companies, ensuring reliable, potable water and safe effluent discharge, and safeguarding aging assets and ecosystems amid climate change pressures. In energy you will contribute to major projects including the Great Grid Upgrade, driving the decarbonisation of the UK electrical supply. In site development you will work across schemes from local property developers to international projects.

We value curiosity, proactivity, and a willingness to challenge convention. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as is an appreciation for diverse thinking and experiences.

Role

  • Experience designing and delivering civil engineering solutions, with a strong technical foundation and a passion for high‑quality outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant design standards, legislation and industry guidance, with the ability to apply them effectively in project delivery.
  • Understanding of statutory approval processes, including planning, stakeholder engagement and technical approvals.

For Senior and Principal Engineer roles, you will also bring:

  • Experience leading projects, workstreams or teams, driving successful outcomes through effective planning and coordination.
  • A passion for developing others through coaching, mentoring and people leadership, helping colleagues thrive and reach their potential.
  • Experience of one or more of the Water, Energy or Site Development sectors.

It would be beneficial if you also have:

  • Working knowledge of industry-standard CAD software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D or MicroStation.
  • Experience using civil engineering design tools such as InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage or Civil 3D.

Qualifications

  • A qualification in Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience) and a strong track record in the design and delivery of civil engineering projects.
  • For Senior and Principal roles, we expect you to be Chartered or Incorporated with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
