Nine men from different backgrounds came together recently through a series of photography workshops at The Welfare to document the people and places at the heart of Ystradgynlais.
This exhibition showcases the powerful work created throughout those sessions.
Led by local street photographer Math Roberts, whose work captures the raw authenticity of the local community, the workshops focused on developing photography skills, building confidence and encouraging connection through creativity.
The group explored street and portrait photography across Ystradgynlais, including the Penybryn estate – an area known locally as “Chinatown” – capturing candid moments, familiar faces and everyday life within the town and surrounding community.
Portrait photography became the focus of the final sessions, resulting in a striking collection of honest and powerful images.
Supported by Engage Cymru – Let’s Create Art and funded by Arts Council of Wales, the project aimed to promote positive mental health, create new friendships and provide opportunities for creative expression.

The exhibition opens on Friday 3rd July at 6.30pm, and runs until Wednesday 26th August.

Men’s arts sessions will continue at The Welfare over the coming months with support from The Bloom Space Foundation.
