Overview
We are looking for a candidate who is willing to put in the work, who can speak up and challenge if needed, and who wants to be part of our journey working from the ground up. The role suits someone passionate about making a real difference to the lives of students. We are seeking candidates with financial experience and/or charity, higher education, or students' union experience.
The appointment is for a three-year term (with the possibility to extend to six years). During this time you will build strong relationships, gain a deep understanding of the organisation, and observe the impact of our work over time.
The Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the Union runs efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Represent the Students Union and safeguard its good name
- Develop and deliver our long-term plan, objectives, policies and procedures, and evaluate performance
- Ensure AUBSU uses its money and resources in pursuit of our charitable aims
- Ensure AUBSU complies with its legal responsibilities and regulatory requirements, including charity law and other relevant legislation
- Ensure that AUBSU acts in accordance with its governing documents
- Ensure AUBSU keeps proper accounts and records
- Monitor the performance of AUBSU
- Protect AUBSU’s assets and their usage
- Work closely with the other Trustees and the Student Union Manager to support effective management of the Union
All Trustees Must
- Act within AUBSU’s governing documents and the law
- Act in the best interests of the organisation as a whole, considering what is best for the Students’ Union and avoiding bringing it into disrepute
- Manage conflicts of interest effectively
- Respect confidentiality
- Be aware of the issues affecting Students’ Unions, students and the wider higher education sector
- Attend meetings, other appointments and give apologies. Trustees should engage in discussions and decision making
- Be fully prepared for meetings
- Actively engage in respectful discussion, debating and voting in meetings and respect other opinions—contributing positively, challenging sensitively, avoiding conflict and listening carefully
