Overview
In this role you will advise ISM members on professional contracts, ensuring they are paid for their work while handling copyright and AI questions. You join a respected in‑house legal team supporting over 11,000 musicians, delivering practical guidance and pursuing unpaid fees through appropriate channels. The work blends contract law, copyright insights, and stakeholder training in a dynamic, member‑focused environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide quick, practical advice to members by phone, email, and meetings on contracts, unpaid fees, copyright/AI issues, and disputes
- Support members in enforcing copyright rights and pursuing small claims or copyright tribunal actions when needed
- Stay current on copyright and AI law and advise members proactively
- Manage multiple cases with deadlines and maintain professional boundaries while delivering high‑quality service
Key requirements
- Degree or equivalent level of education
- At least 3 years’ experience as a Caseworker/Legal Adviser on breaches of contract and copyright
- Proven track record of advising workers and achieving outcomes
- Strong knowledge of contract law and small claims process
- Willingness to learn new legal areas and advise accordingly
- Solutions‑driven with ability to manage multiple cases and shifting priorities
- Excellent drafting, negotiating, and communication skills
- Empathy for workers facing difficulties and ability to address diverse audiences
- Enjoys presenting and training non‑lawyers and maintaining a positive, can‑do attitude
