About Artio

Artio is a pioneer in early-stage carbon insurance, enabling investment in high-quality projects through data-driven risk models. As the only insurer providing coverage before project activity begins, we de-risk investments to help buyers secure carbon credits at scale and accelerate the transition to net zero. In under two years, we have evolved into a market-leading MGA and Lloyd’s coverholder. Backed by capacity from Tokio Marine HCC, Markel, and Apollo, we are already delivering solutions for global institutions (banks, funds, corporates). We are redefining the industry by building an AI-native ecosystem, integrating everything from modelling to pricing in-house to deliver a faster, smarter insurance experience.

About the Role

As our Carbon Associate, you will sit at the intersection of finance, carbon markets, and insurance. You will take ownership of the end-to-end project analysis process. You will collaborate directly with the founding team to assess risks for Nature-based Solutions (ARR, REDD+, IFM), as well as technology-based projects (BiCRS, Biochar, ERW, etc.).

What you’ll be doing

  • This role sits at the intersection of finance, carbon, and insurance. We need someone who loves the details and the nuances of carbon projects.
  • You’ll build and manage the financial models for each project type we underwrite. This involves creating complex financial models, running sensitivity analysis and challenging assumptions.
  • You love data. This includes all kinds: geospatial data, carbon modelling/LCA, political risk. You should be able to understand the model outputs and compare them to the project’s findings and make recommendations for underwriting.
  • You’ll partner with our product team to improve our risk model and approach. You’ll help us scope and build new products as the carbon markets evolve.
  • Sometimes the numbers need a translator. You’ll support the commercial team by explaining the behind our risk outputs to partners and clients, helping get deals across the line.
  • We are scaling, which means things change fast. You’ll tackle ad-hoc analysis and help build our operational processes as we grow.

What you bring to the table

  • You have at least 3 years of experience in assessing carbon projects, particularly their financial aspects.
  • You are incredibly comfortable in Excel/Google Sheets, but want to automate every task you do.
  • You understand carbon markets. You know how market participants (such as registries, marketplaces) operate and what differentiates them.
  • You aren’t afraid of scientific data. You can look at technical outputs (LCA, Geospatial) and comfortably use them to make commercial decisions.
  • We’re a lean team. We need someone we can trust with sensitive data who can take ownership of projects end-to-end.

Nice to haves

  • You’ve survived (and enjoyed) the chaos of an early-stage startup.
  • You know your way around Python (or using AI tools for code).
  • Even if you don’t meet all the above requirements, please apply. We are eager to meet talented and passionate people in carbon markets who have an interest in insurance!

The Package

  • Compensation of £50k–£70k (Depending on your experience level).
  • We offer a meaningful equity package (Employee Stock Options) so that as we succeed, you do too.
  • As we scale, your impact scales with us. You’ll have a direct hand in shaping our culture and benefits, with no ceiling on your growth. As you perform, your responsibility and financial reward will grow in lockstep.
  • We work hybrid. We trust you to work where you’re productive, but we like to work together in London at least once a week.
  • We offer unlimited annual leave. We focus on output, not hours tracked. We trust you to manage your own time and rest when you need it.

How we hire

  • We try to keep this efficient and respectful of your time.
  • A casual conversation with one of the founders to see if our vibes match.
  • A practical task focused on Financial/Risk Modelling so we can see how you think.
  • A final interview with the founding team to dive deeper.
