Studio KIND is a contemporary artist-led visual arts and community space located in The Corn Store at the historic Barnstaple Pannier Market in North Devon. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, they work with local communities to raise the profile of contemporary art and explore regional heritage.
Applications are open for the "Back To The Market" Research Commissions. Studio KIND is commissioning three artist/researchers to investigate three key areas of heritage surrounding the Barnstaple Pannier Market. Artists are asked to explore how historical events link to contemporary issues in Britain today. The three distinct commissions are:
- Commission 1: Exploring the 1934 Barnstaple speech by fascist leader Oswald Mosley, contrasting this history with the positive cultural contributions of current and historical refugee populations in North Devon.
- Commission 2: Responding to the contradictions encapsulated by MP Jeremy Thorpe’s 1968 wedding reception at the market, with a specific focus on LGBTQ+ heritage within living memory.
- Commission 3: Investigating the heritage and social histories of the Pannier Market by using John Gay's 1728 The Beggar’s Opera (a forerunner to modern sampling and collage) as a conceptual model.
The research will culminate in a group exhibition in November 2026, alongside digital outputs and public workshops.

- Additional Fees: £250 GBP (plus travel) per workshop/talk delivered.
- Exhibition: Inclusion in a public-facing group exhibition (physical and virtual) in November 2026.
