About Artificial

At Artificial, we’re building the next generation of technology for the specialty (re)insurance market. Our mission is to transform how brokers and carriers operate in complex markets by removing operational barriers and enabling smarter, faster decision-making. We use modern technology to solve real challenges for some of the world’s leading brokers and insurers. By automating the repetitive and structuring the complex, we help our partners unlock new opportunities for innovation and growth.

You’ll be joining a collaborative team that values curiosity, ownership, and continuous learning. We work in an environment where ideas are heard, support is built-in, and outcomes matter. Everyone here has the chance to make a tangible impact on our products, our customers, and the industry.

We've just raised $45M (£33M) in Series B funding from lead investor CommerzVentures, new investor Move Capital, as well as all existing shareholders. This investment round gives us the room to grow with confidence, continue to innovate, and ensure that Artificial remains the first choice for brokers and carriers seeking a smarter way to trade digitally.

Join us, and take the chance to be a part of something that will change the landscape of insurance for generations.

About the role

Artificial's API-first SaaS platform powers the full lifecycle of specialty (re)insurance - from broking to underwriting - through a proprietary DSL that makes products, workflows, and rules fully programmable. Customers get tailored configurations layered on top by our Forward Deployed Engineering team, making this one of the most flexible and technically ambitious platforms in the market.

We're hiring a QA Engineer to take ownership of quality across our product portfolio and customer specifications. You'll work hands-on across our three product modes - Discovery, Delivery, and Optimisation - embedded alongside Product, Engineering, and Solutions teams. Testing is currently under-resourced and creating real delivery bottlenecks; you'll be one of the first dedicated QA hires brought in to fix that.

This is a high-impact role at a pivotal moment. You'll join an established team of insurance and technical experts as we scale to meet a growing client pipeline, with a clear path from manual testing today into automation as the function matures.

Testing Stack Summary

  • Frontend/E2E: Playwright for end-to-end tests, Jest for frontend unit tests, with LLM-assisted tooling and visual regression reporting baked into the PR workflow.
  • Backend/Infra: Haskell (hspec/quickcheck) for backend testing, golden tests for the DSL compiler, load testing via Artillery/k6, and CI through Buildkite with OpenTelemetry monitoring.

Responsibilities

  • Manual testing execution: Own and execute manual test cases across Artificial's product suite and customer specifications - including functional, regression, integration, and exploratory testing - ensuring thorough coverage before releases reach production.
  • Test planning and design: Write clear, detailed test plans and test cases based on product requirements, acceptance criteria, and specification documents; identify edge cases and risk areas; ensure traceability between requirements and test coverage.
  • Customer specification testing: Test new and updated customer configurations and specifications to validate they meet requirements and behave correctly within the platform — reducing reliance on Field Delivery Engineers for quality verification.
  • Bug identification and reporting: Identify, document, and triage defects with clear reproduction steps, severity assessments, and supporting evidence in Linear; follow up with engineering teams to verify fixes and close the loop.
  • Regression testing: Execute regression test suites ahead of releases to catch unintended side effects; help maintain and expand the regression library as the product evolves.
  • Quality within DDO+ modes: Support QA touch points across Discovery (smoke-testing prototypes and early builds), Delivery (thorough testing of bets and features during development cycles), and Optimisation (validating bug fixes and investigating production issues).
  • Process contribution: Contribute to the development of QA processes, standards, and best practices as the QA function is established; provide feedback on what's working and what needs improvement from the front line of testing.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and Solutions/FDEs to understand requirements, clarify expected behaviour, and ensure alignment on quality expectations for each release or specification.
  • Documentation: Maintain test documentation, test results, and coverage records; contribute to a growing knowledge base of product behaviour, known issues, and testing approaches.
  • Automation growth: As the team's automation capability matures over the first 6-12 months, actively transition high-volume regression and repetitive test cases into automated suites; develop your own automation skills with support from the QA Team Lead and existing tooling (Playwright, CI/CD pipelines).

About you

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience in a QA or software testing role, with a strong foundation in manual testing techniques.
  • Proven ability to write clear, structured test plans and test cases from requirements and specifications.
  • Experience with systematic testing approaches - functional, regression, integration, exploratory - and the judgement to know when each is appropriate.

  • Familiarity with API testing tools (e.g. Postman, REST clients) and browser developer tools.
  • Some exposure to test automation frameworks or scripting (e.g. Cypress, Playwright, Selenium) — you don't need to be an automation expert, but curiosity and willingness to learn is valued.

  • Worked in a growing team where QA processes were still being established, and you helped shape them.

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Artificial Labs uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
