About the role
We are looking for a sharp, commercially-minded Legal Counsel (NQ/PQE) to join our small Legal team and grow with us. Reporting directly to the Head of Legal, you will get hands-on exposure to the legal questions that actually matter to a modern enterprise software company: how we contract with global insurers, brokers and MGAs; how we protect our intellectual property; how we use and govern AI responsibly; and how we keep up with the wave of regulation coming at financial services companies and their technology vendors.
You will be trusted with real work from day one, you will see deals end-to-end, and you will help design the legal playbooks and processes that a fast-growing insurtech needs in order to scale safely. If you trained at a top London firm and did an in-house seat that made you think “this is the bit I want more of”, this role is for you.
What you'll do
- Commercial contracts: Draft, review and negotiate the full range of customer and vendor agreements: SaaS terms, MSAs, order forms, statements of work, data processing agreements, professional services and consultancy contracts and NDAs.
- ICT and AI contracting: Help us stay ahead of how technology contracts are changing in financial services — DORA-style ICT third-party obligations, operational resilience flow-downs, AI value-chain provisions, and the practical clauses our customers are asking for. You will help shape our templates and positions as the rules evolve.
- Intellectual property: Protect and commercialise our IP — our platform, our proprietary domain-specific language (Brossa), our models and our brand. Advise on ownership and licensing across customer agreements and supplier arrangements, and work with Product and Engineering on IP and open-source policy.
- Data protection and privacy: Be a trusted advisor on UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and related regimes. Review DPAs and sub-processor arrangements, help us answer customer security and privacy questionnaires, and partner closely with Compliance and Information Security.
- Build legal processes: Help us turn ad-hoc work into a real legal function: playbooks, templates, fallback positions, intake forms, approval matrices, and the right use of our CLM. You will have a direct hand in deciding how Legal scales from “two of us” to a proper team.
- Cross-functional partnership: Work day-to-day with Commercial, Product, Engineering, Security, Compliance and Finance. Translate complex legal points into clear, actionable advice that helps the business make good decisions quickly.
- Horizon scanning: Keep us informed on the developments that matter — AI regulation, operational resilience, data protection reform, sectoral guidance — and help us decide what to do about them.
About You
You are a newly qualified solicitor (England & Wales) or up to around 1 year PQE, ideally trained at a leading London law firm (Magic Circle, Silver Circle, leading City or top US firm). During your training contract you completed a client secondment or in-house seat, and it left you wanting to spend more of your career on the business side of the table.
You have meaningful exposure across at least two of: commercial contracts (especially technology/SaaS), intellectual property, employment and data protection. Experience touching financial services or insurance regulation is a bonus, but not required.
You write clearly. You can take a complex set of obligations and turn them into something a non-lawyer can read in two minutes and act on.
You are commercially curious. You want to understand what the deal is really about, what the customer actually cares about, and where Legal can help unlock value rather than just police it.
You are excited by AI, technology and the regulatory landscape forming around them — the EU AI Act, DORA and operational resilience, evolving ICT contracting standards — and you want to be part of a team working at the front line of that change.
You are happy operating with autonomy and ambiguity. You enjoy figuring out what “good” looks like when there is no precedent in the filing cabinet, and you are confident asking for help when you need it.
We especially want to hear from you if you have:
- A second in-house seat, a fintech or insurtech secondment, or post-qualification time spent supporting a technology or financial services client.
- Awareness of ISO 27001, SOC 2 and similar security frameworks, and how they show up in customer contracts.
- Experience drafting or negotiating AI-related contractual provisions, including model use, training data, output indemnities and assurance obligations.
