ROLE TITLE: PRINCIPAL CONTROLS ENGINEER REPORTING LINE: The Principal Controls Engineer will report to the Director of Technical Operations for Energy Solutions. DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW: Energy Solutions is a sub-systems solutions arm of Artemis Technologies, responsible for the delivery of Marine lithium-Ion battery and High-Power Charging systems. The group is growing its presence within the business and building on the technology modules developed in our vessel programmes, furthering development for the wider marine market. THE ROLE: This is a functional leadership role which will support the fast paced and exciting development of cutting-edge energy systems for the marine market. Youwill lead model-based control and algorithm development for Energy Solutions products like Battery Management, High Power DC charging and Propulsion systems. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES: Growing and leading the Control Engineering function within the department and maintaining the development processes and toolchain. Perform analysis of system requirements and support decomposition and authoring of control / software requirements. Work with technical specialists to co-ordinate / lead the development of robust control and software architectures for core product. Development of application software and control logic in MATLAB Simulink. Feature and algorithm development for performance, user experience and safety functionality covering a range of energy products from standalone batteries through propulsion. Support in the application of Functional Safety, working with the company software quality / safety management processes and technical specialists. Plant model development to support SIL/MIL test activities. Practical support debugging control logic and interface errors both in a lab and application environment. Carry out MIL and SIL testing within Artemis software development environment. Work closely with peers within multi-disciplinary teams to iterate through system development quickly and efficiently. Introduce new electronics technology to ATL where appropriate. Attend team and 1-1 meetings and fulfil reporting requirements as required by Artemis Technologies. Ensure compliance with Artemis Technologies Policies and Procedures. Build good working relationships across Artemis Technologies. Contribute to shaping a culture that reflects Artemis Technologies Values and Guiding Principles and enables the company to achieve its goals. PERSON SPECIFICATION: Education/Qualifications and Experience Required: Holder of Bachelor (BSc /BEng) degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering). 5+ years working as a Controls Engineer with experience gained in electrification / e-mobility related sectors. Experience with Battery Management / EV Charging Systems. Key Skills & Experience Required: Technical/Design: Model-based design and development, working with MATLAB Simulink, Stateflow, Simscape. Experience with Controls development in e-mobility programs with direct experience in Propulsion, Battery Management or Vehicle Control and Energy Management. Knowledge of data communication protocols including CAN, RS-485 & RS-232. Ability to understand and development in accordance with customer & regulatory design requirements. Able to investigate, diagnose and solve control logic bugs and hardware failures. Able to liaise with critical suppliers and technical partners, coordinating work delivery and content. Experience with Embedded C/C++ and Python is a plus, but not essential. Experience with different Lithium-Ion Battery chemistries is a plus but not essential. Control Engineering within a robust new product development framework (e.g. ASPICE). Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and familiarity with SysML is desirable. Communication: Good report writing skills clear, concise, and well structured. Excellent interpersonal skills. Organising: Ability to coordinate with other departments and flag issues. A focus on delivery to an agreed schedule. Teamworking: Ability to relate well to others, and build co-operative and collaborative working relationships, both internally and externally.
