As our Environmental Advisor, you will lead meaningful change across the network, from climate resilience and biodiversity to carbon literacy and compliance. What you\βll be doing:
- Within this role, you will lead climate risk assessments to identify how changing weather and climate patterns could impact ARL and help us prepare with practical adaptation plans that align with our sustainability goals.
- You will provide clear recommendations to reduce environmental risks and build resilience across our operations, working closely with colleagues to embed climate thinking into everyday decisions.
- The Environmental Advisor will collaborate with teams across the business to integrate climate risk and sustainability into planning, strategy, and operations, ensuring long-term impact.
- This individual will monitor and evaluate the progress of our climate adaptation measures, updating plans as new data and science emerge.
- You will oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of carbon emissions data across ARL, ensuring accurate tracking of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
- Within this role, you will support our ESG Environment and Reporting Coordinator by compiling KPIs and contributing to regular business reporting, including updates against RfL and Arriva environmental objectives.
- You will manage the auditing and upkeep of ARL\βs ISO14001 and ISO50001 Environment and Energy Management System certifications, ensuring we meet high standards.
- The Environmental Advisor will deliver Carbon Literacy Training across the organisation and identify opportunities to roll out environmental awareness training for operational colleagues.
- You will carry out environmental site inspections across the London Overground network to ensure legal compliance, meet internal standards, and identify areas for improvement.
- Within this role, you will lead biodiversity and air quality improvement programmes, including our annual Overground in Bloom competition, and represent ARL at AUKT Environment Network and wider industry meetings.
- You will influence and support colleagues at all levels, including senior leaders, to embed environmental standards and initiatives into their work and drive performance.
- The Environmental Advisor will create and deliver an annual environmental engagement plan, maintain ARL\βs Environment Policy Statement, and ensure we are prepared to manage incidents such as spills, waste, noise, and natural disasters. You will also stay up to date with current and future environmental and energy legislation.
Qualifications:
- You will need a degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field. A master\βs degree or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification would be a welcome addition.

This individual will need to hold or be working towards membership of a recognised professional body such as IEMA or CIWEM.

The Environmental Advisor will need proven experience in delivering environmental or sustainability projects, ideally within transport, infrastructure, or rail.
- You will need a solid understanding of environmental legislation, ISO standards, and impact assessments, along with experience in audits and site inspections.
- This individual will need to be confident in carbon reporting, biodiversity strategies, and using tools such as Excel for data analysis.
- You will need familiarity with ESG reporting frameworks, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and EU taxonomy requirements.
