Are you an experienced leader with a strong background in fleet or depot management? Arriva is looking for an enthusiastic and results-driven Engineering Manager to lead the engineering operation at our Castleford and Selby depots. This pivotal role will take full responsibility for the maintenance of our fleet, overseeing engineering, cleaning, and fuelling teams, and ensuring our depot runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
About the Role
- Lead and manage the entire engineering operation at Castleford and Selby, including engineering, cleaning, fuelling, and shunting staff.
- Ensure fleet maintenance is delivered to the highest standard, minimising lost mileage and downtime.
- Drive efficiency within the depot while maintaining full compliance with Health & Safety and environmental legislation.
- Be responsible for financial performance, budget management, and achieving operational targets.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, engaging with teams to deliver positive change.
- Report to the Fleet Engineer and work closely with the Engineering Director, confidently influencing and advising stakeholders at all levels.
- Liaise with internal teams including HR, Payroll, Operations and the wider Engineering Management Team.
- Manage relationships with external suppliers and contractors.
Previous experience in the bus industry is not essential, but a solid track record of managing a similar commercial fleet operation is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Minimise engineering-related lost mileage and ensure traffic requirements are met.
- Manage staffing levels, recruitment, performance and absence within the engineering and support teams.
- Promote and enforce Health & Safety compliance across the depot.
- Ensure all defects are recorded and rectified in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the Transformation Team to deliver strategic improvements.
- Oversee effective budget management and drive operational efficiencies.
- Ensure contractor and supplier performance meets Company standards.
- Support strategic business performance with an awareness of competitor activity and positive union relations.
Person Specification
- Strong understanding of commercial fleet maintenance and relevant legislation.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to motivate and engage teams.
- Effective communication and influencing skills across all levels.
- Experience managing budgets and achieving financial targets.
- Ability to drive operational improvements and implement change.
- High levels of motivation, professionalism, and confidence.
- A fast-paced, hands-on management style with excellent organisational skills.
- Ideally holds a PCV licence and knowledge of PCV/HGV maintenance.
