Grand Central is entering an exciting new chapter with the introduction of our new train fleet, and we're looking for an experienced Project Safety Lead to play a pivotal role in ensuring its safe and successful entry into service.
Reporting to the Head of Safety, you'll act as the safety lead for a major rolling stock introduction programme, ensuring compliance with rail legislation, industry standards, and safety management requirements while supporting the safe introduction of new trains onto the UK rail network.
- What you'll be doing
- Lead safety assurance activities across the new train introduction programme.
- Develop and maintain the project's Safety Management Plan.
- Manage hazard identification, risk assessments and hazard logs, ensuring risks are reduced to ALARP.
- Oversee safety cases and evidence required for authorisation and entry into service.
- Work collaboratively with engineering, operations, maintenance, training and project teams to embed safety throughout the project lifecycle.
- Liaise with manufacturers, regulators, independent assessors and industry stakeholders.
- Support project gateways with expert safety advice, recommendations and sign‑off.
- Drive continuous improvement and promote a strong safety culture across the business.
What we're looking for
- Essential: Significant experience in a safety management role within the UK rail industry.
- Experience supporting new rolling stock introductions, major modifications or complex rail projects.
- Strong knowledge of UK rail safety legislation and standards, including ROGS and CSM-RA.
- Experience managing hazard logs, safety cases and assurance activities.
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Desirable: NEBOSH, IRSE Safety Engineering or equivalent safety/risk management qualification.
- Experience working with rolling stock manufacturers, ROSCOs or Train Operating Companies.
