About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Operational Trainer / Assessor to deliver and assess safety-critical training across our national depot network. You’ll be instrumental in building operational capability—designing engaging training programmes, assessing competence, and ensuring our people meet the highest standards of safety, compliance and performance. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll collaborate closely with operational teams while acting as a subject matter expert and role model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training Delivery & Development
    • Deliver safety-critical and technical training, including Track Safety, Driving and shunting, Technical and equipment training.
    • Design and develop engaging learning materials and programmes.
    • Adapt training to meet operational and contract-specific requirements.
    • Take ownership of the quality and consistency of assigned training courses.
  • Assessment & Competency
    • Plan and conduct workplace-based assessments for vocational qualifications.
    • Provide clear, timely and evidence-based feedback to learners and managers.
    • Support individuals who are “not yet competent” with structured development plans.
    • Maintain accurate records in line with company, customer and regulatory requirements.
    • Support the management of competency frameworks and matrices.
  • Planning & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Plan and coordinate training delivery, including logistics, resources and scheduling.
    • Work closely with stakeholders to ensure effective outcomes.
    • Support mobilisation activities through delivery of training packages.
  • Continuous Improvement & Leadership
    • Monitor and improve training effectiveness.
    • Mentor and support other trainers and assessors.
    • Maintain your own professional and technical competence.
    • Champion a strong safety culture at all times.

About You

Essential Experience & Knowledge

  • 3–5+ years’ experience within the rail industry.
  • Strong understanding of train depot operations and rolling stock.
  • Experience delivering training and carrying out workplace assessments.
  • Confident, engaging facilitator able to work with diverse groups.
  • Strong communication, organisation and reporting skills.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Engineering qualification (C&G / BTEC or equivalent).
  • Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA, A1, CAVA).
  • Teaching/Training qualification (e.g. PTLLS, CTLLS, PGCE, CertEd).
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:

  • Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification.
  • Mentoring/coaching qualification.
