What you will do
The Lead BI Engineer owns the technical delivery within the BI practice, focusing on data modelling, reporting, and analytical solution delivery. They translate Principal-level standards and architecture into high-quality, performant BI solutions while coaching and developing BI Engineers. They are accountable for day-to-day delivery, quality, performance, and client confidence in the BI domain, ensuring all BI solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned to best practice. This role blends:
- Deep technical expertise in BI solution design, data modelling, and DAX development
- Delivery leadership and squad/project ownership
- Mentorship and development of BI Engineers
- Consultancy and client‑facing capability
The Lead BI Engineer ensures BI projects are delivered efficiently, with high technical quality, and aligned to broader engineering standards and strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Own technical delivery for BI projects, ensuring high-quality, performant, and maintainable solutions.
- Lead the design, development, and optimisation of enterprise‑scale BI solutions across Azure Fabric, Synapse, Databricks, and Lakehouse environments.
- Provide technical guidance on data modelling, DAX optimisation, tabular modelling, and reporting performance.
- Ensure solutions support advanced analytics, including AI/Co‑Pilot‑ready datasets and reporting.
- Conduct performance tuning and optimisation across DAX, SQL, and data models to deliver responsive reporting solutions.
- Remain hands‑on with complex BI builds, model refactoring, and performance problem solving.
- Translate business requirements into pragmatic, high‑quality BI solutions aligned with Principal‑defined architecture.
- Implement and enforce BI engineering standards, including coding standards, modelling best practices, CI/CD, and testing strategies.
- Apply and improve continuous integration and deployment processes for BI content using tools such as: Tabular Editor, Azure Cost Management & monitoring tools, Performance monitoring dashboards for datasets and reports.
- Contribute reusable BI patterns, templates, and accelerator content to improve delivery consistency.
- Ensure security, governance, and cost‑efficiency are embedded into all BI solutions.
- Act as the primary technical contact for clients on BI solutions.
- Lead BI‑focused workshops, solution design sessions, and performance reviews.
- Translate complex BI concepts into clear guidance for clients, stakeholders, and delivery teams.
- Confidently challenge inefficient approaches or unsafe delivery practices while maintaining strong client relationships.
- Promote BI best practice internally and externally, including AI/Co‑Pilot adoption and modern analytics trends.
Delivery & Commercial Accountability
- Own day‑to‑day technical delivery of BI projects, including milestone management, technical risk, and solution quality.
- Support project planning, estimation, and resourcing with accurate technical input.
- Escalate issues appropriately and intervene in problem resolution when required.
- Ensure solutions are commercially viable, technically sound, and delivered on time.
- Coach and mentor BI Engineers and Senior BI Engineers in: DAX and SQL optimisation, Performance tuning, Deployment pipelines and CI/CD.
- Promote a culture of technical excellence, learning, and accountability.
- Act as the go‑to technical authority within the BI squad or project.
- Support progression and development plans for BI practice members, including certification paths and skills growth.
How you will do it
Technical Expertise
- Expert‑level proficiency in DAX, Power BI, SQL, and tabular model design.
- Strong experience with Azure Fabric, Synapse, Databricks, and Lakehouse data architectures.
- Performance tuning expertise for both data models and DAX measures.
- Hands‑on experience with BI CI/CD tools, including: Tabular Editor, Monitoring and cost management tools.
- Experience building datasets and models designed for AI/Co‑Pilot integration.
- Strong understanding of data governance, security, and best practice reporting architecture.
Leadership & Consultancy Skills
- Proven experience leading BI delivery in consultancy or client‑facing environments.
- Ability to translate Principal strategy into practical BI delivery.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with confidence engaging senior client teams.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining technical BI concepts to non‑technical audiences.
- Comfortable leading design sessions, workshops, and problem‑solving discussions.
Experience & Background
- Demonstrable experience delivering enterprise BI solutions, dashboards, and analytics platforms.
- Experience leading BI projects or squads, owning technical delivery and team guidance.
- Track record of optimising complex BI models for performance and scalability.
- Experience with Azure, Fabric, Synapse, Databricks, and Lakehouse integration.

Location(s)
We are a fully remote company but love spending time with our customers so we like to be present and on site with them when we can – at least two to three days a week. All candidates must reside and be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role. We cannot support VISA sponsorship at this time.
