Health Trainer Careers
As a health trainer, you will give advice to people about healthier lifestyle choices to improve the overall health and well‑being of the community. Your role focuses on promoting healthy behaviours such as regular exercise, safe sexual practices, reduced alcohol consumption, breastfeeding and enabling people to integrate a healthy lifestyle into everyday life.
Responsibilities
- Support individuals to understand how their behaviour affects their health and guide them to make positive changes.
- Explain the benefits of healthy food choices and lifestyle habits.
- Encourage community participation and help people access local health services.
- Lead individual and group conversations and workshops.
- Record activity levels and outcomes, using the data to motivate clients.
Qualifications, Education and Experience
- Good knowledge of health issues facing the community.
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Remunerated or voluntary experience working with local community groups.
- GCSE (grade C) in English, and a National Vocational Qualification (Level 3) or equivalent is desirable.
- Experience in individual training, food therapy or dietetics, or health instructing is beneficial.
Training Details
- On‑the‑job training covering health and safety, time management and record‑keeping.
- Support to obtain the C&G Certification for Health Trainer (Level 3), covering excellent relationships with the public, facilitating behaviour change, healthy sponsorship and effective communication skills.
Skills and Knowledge
- Ability to build strong relationships with other organisations.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills.
- Ability to stay current with health recommendations.
- Strong listening, communication and time‑management skills.
- Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
Salary and Benefits
- Annual salary ranges between $15,500 and $18,500.
Working Conditions
Work 17 to 30 hours per week, primarily in community leisure centres, GP practices or outdoor settings. Hours may include weekends and evenings to run meetings and group workshops.
Career Opportunities
Progression to roles such as health improvement specialist or team supervisor, requiring a public health degree or postgraduate qualification. Various related careers available within community development and health promotion.
