Chartered Heritage Building Surveyor

Full time position at Arnold Bartosch Ltd, Cheltenham, with hybrid working. Arnold Bartosch is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all backgrounds. No agencies, please.

The Opportunity

Arnold Bartosch is a specialist heritage conservation practice based in Cheltenham. We care for churches, listed buildings and traditionally constructed properties across Gloucestershire, Wales and beyond. Our work includes parish churches and ancient monuments as well as listed homes and historic estates. We combine careful diagnosis with practical, proportionate repair.

We're looking for a Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS) to join our small, growing team. You'll take a leading role on a varied caseload of conservation-led projects, from first inspection through to completion on site. You'll work closely with clients, contractors, conservation officers and specialist consultants. This is a chance to do meaningful work on buildings that matter to the communities around them, in a practice where your judgement is trusted and your contribution is visible.

What you'll do

  • Carry out detailed condition surveys and inspections of historic buildings, including drone surveys and quinquennial inspections.
  • Diagnose defects in traditional construction and develop conservation-led repair strategies grounded in sound repair philosophy.
  • Prepare clear, well-reasoned reports, specifications, schedules of work and drawings for repair, alteration and adaptation projects.
  • Prepare and support applications for statutory and ecclesiastical consents, including Listed Building Consent, Planning Permission, Scheduled Monument Consent and Faculty (DAC) applications.
  • Commission and coordinate specialist inputs from structural engineers, archaeologists, ecologists, arborists, and timber, drainage and asbestos surveyors.
  • Run tender and procurement processes and act as Contract Administrator on site, monitoring quality and compliance with approvals.
  • Contribute to cost management, programming and project reporting, and fulfil CDM duties where required.
  • Be the trusted point of contact for clients, from parochial church councils to private owners and institutions.

About you

Essential

  • MRICS (Building Surveying pathway).
  • Experience with historic or traditionally constructed buildings.
  • A strong grasp of conservation principles, traditional materials and repair philosophy.
  • Excellent report-writing skills: clear, proportionate and well-evidenced.
  • Confident with clients and able to manage several projects at once.
  • A collaborative approach and a practical, thoughtful problem-solver.
  • Full UK driving licence (our projects span a wide geographic area).

Desirable

  • RICS Building Conservation Accreditation, or IHBC membership (or working towards either).
  • Experience of ecclesiastical work and the Faculty Jurisdiction process.
  • Contract administration experience under JCT forms.
  • CAD skills.

What we offer

Amongst other benefits, you can expect:

  • A competitive salary, reflecting your experience.
  • Varied, rewarding work, including nationally significant heritage assets.
  • A supportive, friendly team with a strong conservation ethos.
  • CPD sessions and support towards conservation accreditation.
  • Agile working, balanced with time in the office and on site.
  • Work with real social and community impact.
  • Regular team days and socials.
