Carpenter and Joiner in the British Army
As a full-time soldier, entry-level Carpenter and Joiner, you'll:
- Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in the field
- Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery
- Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames and fitments
- Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments
- Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms and erect access scaffold and install ladders
- Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork and shoring
- Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and L2 apprenticeship)
To qualify, you must:
- Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months
- Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject
- Be able to pass a basic fitness test.
From the start of your training, you'll earn £26,334 a year which will go up as you progress in your career. You don't need to know how to do the job before you get here, because we'll give you all the training you need.
Step 1 is your initial military training teaching you how to be a soldier. Step 2 will be 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering where you'll learn military engineering skills including demolition and bridge building. Step 3 will be 21 weeks of carpentry training including using machinery and hand tools to make timber building materials.
You’ll also receive 30 days annual leave every year.
