As a full-time soldier, entry-level Carpenter and Joiner in the British Army, you will:

  • Plan carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and apply them in the field
  • Learn to use and maintain workshop machinery
  • Prepare timber for use, manufacture joints, use adhesives, produce windows, door frames and fitments
  • Carry out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments
  • Construct scaffolding, interpret scaffold terms and erect access scaffold and install ladders
  • Install partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork and shoring
  • Study for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and L2 apprenticeship)

You will need to have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject.

From the start of your training, you will earn £26,334 a year which will go up as you progress in your career. You will be gaining transferable skills that could set you up for life. You do not need to know how to do the job before you get here, because we will give you all the training you need.

Step 1 is your initial military training teaching you how to be a soldier which will be basic military training if you are a Junior Soldier and adult basic training if you are a Regular Soldier. Step 2 will be 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering where you will learn military engineering skills including demolition and bridge building. Step 3 will be 21 weeks of carpentry training including using machinery and hand tools to make timber building materials.

You will also receive 30 days annual leave every year.
