Overview

In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a high level of quality for products delivered by our plant. The Quality Engineer is expected to operate within a framework of procedures and specific targets in pursuit of overall department goals and objectives. This position is primarily based at the Droitwich site, however, it will require some travel for inspections at Supplier sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate incoming, in-process, and final inspection activities to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Optimize quality control efficiency and effectiveness by implementing sound quality sampling methods.
  • Perform dimensional checks against GA/isometrics, bolt torque, gasket type, flow direction, and tagging.
  • Oversee NDT coordination (VT, PT/MT, RT/UT as applicable); review reports and close out findings.
  • Offer guidance to inspectors as needed to ensure accurate and consistent inspection practices.

Standards, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure builds conform to specifications, P&IDs, isometrics, and applicable codes (e.g., ISO 9001 QMS, PED/UKCA where applicable, ASME/EN pipework standards, electrical standards).
  • Maintain device/heat-number traceability; control calibrated instruments and welding consumables per procedure.
  • Create/own ITPs, quality plans, inspection checklists, and weld maps; manage NCRs, concessions, and corrective actions.

Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead the NCR Management System (5 Whys, Ishikawa) with measurable effectiveness checks in place.
  • Ensure that all SPC defects /first-pass yield/defect Pareto to target chronic issues (e.g., gasket seating, torque scatter, cable terminations).
  • Feed manufacturability improvements back to Design (Poka-Yoke, standardization of valves/instrumentation, clearer isos/BOMs).
  • Coach welders/fitters/assembly techs on inspection criteria, pressure-test safety, cleanliness standards, and E&I test methods.
  • Participate in daily stand-ups and readiness reviews; provide clear quality status and risk visibility to PMs and Production.
  • Host client/third-party inspectors; manage hold/witness points and close comments professionally.

Skills & Requirements

  • Solid, hands-on experience in mechanical/electromechanical fabrication or modular plant construction.
  • Ability to read/interpret P&IDs, isometrics, GA drawings, electrical schematics, and data sheets.
  • Competent with precision measurement, pressure testing rigs, torquing methods, and basic electrical test equipment.
  • Familiar with welding quality (WPS/PQR/WPQR), material traceability, and typical NDT methods.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 QMS and project documentation controls.
  • Strong communicator who is comfortable on the shop floor and with clients/inspectors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Manufacturing Engineering or similar.
  • Six Sigma (Green Belt a plus); prior experience with SPC and CAPA.
  • Experience with PED/UKCA, ASME B31.x/EN piping codes, pressure testing standards, ATEX considerations (where relevant), and BMS/I/O FATs.
  • E&I familiarity: continuity/IR testing, loop checks, VFD setup basics.

KPIs / Success Measures

  • First pass yield on FAT, NCR rate & closure lead time, punch-list burn-down before ship date.
  • On-time data book delivery, client/TP inspection acceptance at first presentation.
  • Leak-free pressure tests, reduction in rework hours, effectiveness of CAPA (sustained).

Tools & Systems (example stack)

  • QMS: ISO 9001 workflows, NCR/CAPA system (e.g. ETQ/Intelex/Jira).
  • Drawings & Data: Autodesk/Inventor/Plant 3D, Navisworks, or similar; Office/365.
  • Test: Calibrated pressure gauges, recorders/data-loggers, torque tools, multi-meters, insulation testers.
