SDES - Early Childhood Educator 6.00 in Somerset

Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education, Somerset District Elementary School is seeking an Early Childhood Educator for 6.00 hours per day for the 2026-2027 School Year. The closing date for applications is August 9, 2026, at Midnight.

Starting Wages:

• Early Childhood Educator 1 - Fully Qualified - $27.69 per hour
• Early Childhood Educator 2 - Partially Qualified - $18.53 per hour

Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU) Local 73 Bargaining Unit located at avrce.ca. This position is subject to the Annual Layoff/Recall Process as per Articles 29 & 30 of the NSGEU Local 73 Collective Agreement.

The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) will report to the School Principal and will collaboratively work with and support the Lead Early Childhood Educator (LECE) within the Pre-primary Program Team, ensuring a supportive and secure environment for young children attending the Pre-primary Program. The ECE will assist the LECE in creating and maintaining an engaging learning environment, encouraging children to explore and create new knowledge through their experiences and social interactions.

The ECE will support the use of evidence-based practices and professional judgement to ensure the environment focuses on the holistic development and overall well-being of the children. Working cooperatively with the LECE, the ECE will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the Pre-primary Program using the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework. The ECE will be an active member of the school team, working cooperatively with the LECE to support the consistent delivery and assessment of a high-quality early learning experience for children.

Requirements for the Early Childhood Educator:

• A Diploma in Early Childhood Education and a minimum of three years of recent experience working with preschool-aged children.
• In-depth understanding of child growth and development and demonstrated knowledge and experience using a play-based pedagogy and child-centered, developmentally appropriate practices.
• Able to translate theory and best practices into action in early childhood settings.
• Experience with developmentally appropriate observation, documentation, and authentic assessment strategies.
• Experience working with children and families with diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, and developmental needs.
• Able to create inclusive and responsive early learning environments that support the diverse and special needs of all children.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Computer skills suitable for report writing and internet research/applications.
• Valid Standard First Aid.
• Valid Food Handlers Course.
• Successful completion of the Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks.
