Trainee FOH Server in Greenock

Trainee FOH Server in Greenock

Greenock Trainee On-site

This can be your first job. We mean that properly, not as a line in an advert. You don't need to have worked in a restaurant, or anywhere. Most of the people here started with nothing behind them and we're set up to teach it.

The person who runs our front of house started here with no experience at all. It was her first job. She now leads the whole team.

We should be straight about what the job actually is, though. You're on your feet. It's evenings, weekends and Sundays, which is when your friends will be out. A Saturday night is hard work and it doesn't ease off until it's over. If you'd rather find that out now than three weeks in, that's why we've put it here.

What we can't teach is whether you're good company when the room is full. That part you either bring or you don't, and it's most of what we're actually looking for.

What you'd learn, and roughly when

The first few weeks. Setting and clearing tables, running food out, learning the menu, and watching how a service actually works. Being useful without being in the way. Nobody expects more than that at the start.

After that. Taking orders yourself, looking after your own tables, working the chippy counter and handling money.

Once you're comfortable. The phone. Collection orders and bookings, which is the hardest part of front of house here, because it always rings when you're already busy.

All the way through. Setting up before the doors open and cleaning down after they shut. Everybody does this, including the people who've been here twenty years.

What we offer

Β£8.00 an hour. Around Β£128 a week at 16 hours.

Around 16 hours a week to start with, mostly evenings and weekends, including Sundays. If you want more once you've found your feet, there are usually more to be had. You'll get the rota in advance.

Proper training, from the people who actually do the job, on shift. Not a folder and a video on your first afternoon.

Tips. The team run and share their own tips between them; the business isn't involved. They're consistently well above what's typical for the area, and the team will tell you straight what that actually comes to when you meet them.

Free meals on shift, 40% staff discount, workplace pension.

What we're looking for

No experience, no qualifications, and a basic CV about you, rather than your experience if you haven't got any yet. Here is what we do care about.

Turning up. On time, ready to work, every shift you're on. This is the one that decides how it goes for you. We're laid back about most things and not about this one.

Liking people. This is four or five hours of talking to strangers. Most of them are lovely. A few of them won't be, and you'll need to be pleasant to those ones too.

Asking rather than guessing. You'll get things wrong. Everybody did. What matters is that you ask, and that we don't have to tell you the same thing three times.

Keeping your head. When three things need doing at once, working out which one comes first and staying cheerful while you do it.

Presentation. For most of our customers you are the face of the business. Take some pride in that.

Clear communication in English, on the floor and on the phone.

Who we are

We've been Arlecchino for sixty years this year, and the family has been feeding Greenock since 1921. We're independent, family-run, and still on West Blackhall Street. Straightforward food done properly, Italian and chippy both, family recipes, no fuss, and generations of regulars who'd tell us quickly if that ever stopped being true.

Where this goes

We're building the front of house out properly over the next couple of years, which means there will be more senior jobs here than there are now. We'd far rather fill them with people we've trained ourselves than with strangers.

We're not going to promise anybody a promotion in a job advert. But if you're good and you stay, there is somewhere to go, and if you have other plans, like Uni or College, that's ok too. This job will well prepare you for your next stage.

How it works

An informal chat first, don't worry, it's not a scary interview, then a paid trial shift so you can see what a service actually looks like before you commit to anything.

You'd be shadowing somebody, not thrown in at the deep end. Nobody is going to judge you on skills you haven't been taught yet. We're looking at how you are with people and whether you'd enjoy it.

Start date is flexible. If you are working somewhere at the moment, we'd expect you to give them proper notice.

Apply with a CV and a short note about yourself.
