A leading manufacturing business in Chesterfield is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join their engineering team. This role will play a key part in supporting site operations and leading automation projects across multiple production facilities. As an Automation Engineer, you will provide technical support across electrical, mechanical, and automation disciplines while leading and coordinating automation projects. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance across the site. The role will involve supporting both the Chesterfield and Bradford production sites.
Key Responsibilities- Provide daily technical support across electrical, mechanical, and automation systems
- Program and configure PLCs and HMI systems using Siemens (TIA Portal, Simatic Manager, WinCC) and Allen Bradley platforms
- Lead automation projects including planning, coordination, and delivery
- Develop and maintain control systems, including PLC, HMI, and robotics solutions
- Design and produce electrical schematics, control panel drawings, and P&IDs using AutoCAD
- Support installation, commissioning, and start-up of new equipment
- Diagnose and resolve automation and control system faults using structured troubleshooting methods
- Work with fieldbus systems including Profinet, Profibus, ASI Bus, and CAN Bus
- Program and debug automated machinery and conveyor systems
- Conduct system testing and validation of new or modified equipment
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, and external suppliers to resolve issues and implement improvements
- Identify and deliver continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency
- Maintain and document software updates, backups, and system changes
- Support training and development of apprentices and engineering teams
- Assist with risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety and statutory requirements
- Proven experience in an Automation Engineer or similar role within manufacturing
- Strong PLC programming experience with Siemens and/or Allen Bradley systems
- Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols
- Knowledge of drive systems and servo technology (SEW experience advantageous)
- Experience using AutoCAD or similar for electrical design and documentation
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills across automation systems
- Experience managing or coordinating engineering projects
- Ability to work cross-functionally and communicate effectively at all levels
- Proactive approach with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation
- Salary of £55,000 - £60,000
