About the role
To underwrite Energy Liability business alongside the Unit Head of Energy Liability, to produce an acceptable and consistent return to capital providers. Working alongside the Unit Head of Energy Liability to manage and develop an existing portfolio of open market and facility Energy Liability business, including upstream, midstream and downstream risks, written both on a lead and follow basis. To act in accordance with the agreed limitations in respect of underwriting risks and within the guidelines set by the Board. Ensure that the interests of customers are taken into consideration at all times.
Key responsibilities
- Support the development and execution of the Energy Liability underwriting strategy.
- Produce and underwrite new and renewal Energy Liability business in accordance with the team’s underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, coverholders and cedants, proactively promoting the Energy Liability offering and identifying new business opportunities, including business travel where necessary.
- Assist the Unit Head of Energy Liability with both regular and ad hoc portfolio reporting, including monthly reports, business planning, reinsurance packs.
- Manage underwriting referrals and enquiries from existing coverholders in line with the team’s underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
- Monitor market developments, emerging risks and industry trends within the Energy Liability sector and identify opportunities for portfolio growth and product development.
- Undertake a full assessment of risks to be written, including analysis of exposures, claims, coverage, pricing adequacy, and risk quality using relevant pricing and exposure modelling tools.
- Maintain high underwriting and documentation standards and ensure compliance with internal governance requirements.
- Ensuring all relevant risks have been accurately recorded in the Open Box+ system.
- Providing guidance and support to junior team members and underwriting assistants.
- Undertake any other related duties as may be reasonably required.

Skills and experience
- Proven track record of underwriting Energy Liability business in the London market across upstream, midstream and downstream sectors, delivering an acceptable and consistent return to capital providers.
- Thorough knowledge of Energy Liability products, coverage issues and underwriting processes within a Lloyd’s or Company Market environment.
- Strong technical underwriting, pricing and portfolio management capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients and stakeholders.
- ACII qualified or working towards qualification, or equivalent market experience.
- Sound understanding of Company, PRA, FCA, Lloyd's and other regulatory compliance requirements.
- Results-driven with strong commercial awareness and the ability to identify business opportunities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Competent IT skills and experience using underwriting and portfolio management systems.
