This is a hands-on technical leadership role with a strong focus on data architecture, application performance, and platform scalability. You’ll lead a small senior engineering team, combining technical delivery with people leadership (around 75% technical / 25% line management). Your focus will be on enabling the platform to scale intelligently — supporting reporting, APIs, AI/LLM usage, and real-time customer insight.
What You’ll Do- Lead and support a newly forming team focused on data architecture and application optimisation
- Drive structural change within a large, established codebase to support scale
- Influence architecture, design, and technology decisions across the platform
- Partner closely with Product, Engineering Managers, and SRE leadership
- Translate strategic scaling goals into clear, deliverable roadmap initiatives
- Contribute to engineering-wide OKRs and technical direction
- Champion a culture of learning, collaboration, and thoughtful technical challenge
- Remain technically hands-on, solving complex backend and data-driven problems
Strong backend experience is essential. Core technologies include:
- C# / .NET (Framework & .NET Core)
- Azure SQL Server
- Azure Cloud Platform
Bonus experience (nice to have):
- Azure Cognitive Search
- Data pipelines (Fabric or similar)
- Search technologies (Lucene, Elastic, NoSQL, MSSQL)
- MS SQL views and performance optimisation
You don’t need the job title — but you do need the leadership mindset. You’ll thrive here if you are:
- A strong backend engineer with deep .NET and Azure experience
- Comfortable leading technical change in mature, complex systems
- Skilled at breaking down big, ambiguous problems into clear actions
- Emotionally intelligent and collaborative across teams
- Confident challenging decisions — kindly and constructively
- Motivated by learning, improvement, and meaningful impact
- An excellent communicator who helps align people and priorities
- Up to £90,000
- £1,000+ annual learning & development budget
- 33 days holiday (rising to 40)
- 4-week paid sabbatical after 5 years
- Private medical, dental & vision cover
- Income protection & death-in-service
- Matched 5% pension
- 20 hours paid volunteering time
- Regular team socials & All-Hands events
- A genuinely kind, ambitious, inclusive engineering culture
