Overview
At IIT, we are committed to advancing human-centered science and technology. The role is part of the Horizon Europe project AIRCARE, focusing on robotics and AI for the diagnosis and treatment of upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) diseases. This position is within the Biomedical Robotics Lab under Dr. Leonardo De Mattos, collaborating with surgeons to develop a next‑generation robot‑assisted laser microsurgery system.
The Role
The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and surgeons to refine, validate, deploy, and clinically test a novel robot‑assisted laser microsurgery system for the upper aero-digestive tract. Core focus will be on vision systems to add autonomy to our surgical robots. The position requires physical presence at IIT in Genova. Remote work is not possible.
Responsibilities
- Design, implementation and testing of vision systems for surgical task autonomy
- Contribution to the documentation needed for clinical trials
- Extensive experimentation with partner surgeons
- Preparation of reports and scientific papers
Essential Requirements
- PhD degree in engineering, computer science or related field
- Experience with vision systems
- Experience in control of robotic systems
- Experience in medical robotics
- Strong publication record
- Strong interest in medical devices
- Capacity to work autonomously and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment
- Analytical reasoning skills and a growth mindset
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Availability to work in Genoa, Italy
Additional Skills
- Experience with real‑time vision systems
- Experience in the control of robotic arms such as Kuka Med, UR5, or Franka
- Experience in automation and/or autonomous systems
- Knowledge of study design and experimental data analysis
- Research experience in robotic microsurgery
- Experience in the development of medical devices under MDR
- Experience in clinical trials
- Proficiency in Italian
- Ability to work in a challenging and international environment
Compensation Package
Yearly gross salary between 37,500€ and 45,000€
Private health care coverage depending on role and contract
Possible deduction from taxable income up to 90% for candidates from abroad or Italians with permanent research activity abroad
