Who is Southwell Racecourse and Golf Course?

Set the in the town of Southwell near Newark and one of only six all-weather racecourse tracks in the UK, Southwell has its own unique charm and character, making it one of the premier sporting venues in the East Midlands. After previously owning the UK’s only fibresand surface All-Weather track, Southwell switched over to a Tapeta surface as of 2021. With racing on both All-Weather and Turf tracks taking place throughout the year, we are one of the country's busiest racecourses.

Not only are we Horseracing at Southwell we are also home to Southwell Golf Club. The course has two contrasting nine holes. The Front 9 sits within Southwell Racecourse and is characterised by a large number of water hazards. The seventh hole, a 138 yards par 3 with an island green is Southwell’s signature hole.

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our team in maintaining the racecourse to the highest standards all year round. This varied and hands-on role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions to prepare and maintain the racing surface, parade rings, lawns, car parks, and external areas. You’ll also support racedays and events, working with machinery and equipment as required.

This is a rewarding but physically demanding position, requiring flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays. While you’ll be part of a team, the ability to work independently and take initiative is essential.

Some of the key responsibilities of the Grounds Person would include-

  • Under the direction of the Clerk of the Course, carry out a maintenance programme for the course. The work entails working outside in changing and often inclement weather conditions and can be physically demanding.
  • To assist in preparing the course for racing – to include preparation and reinstatement of the course before, after and during racing, this to include: - Use of tractors, machinery and all-weather maintenance equipment as required.
  • You will be required to use various gardening, agricultural equipment, machinery, vehicles, and chemicals in the process of carrying out your duties.
  • Abide by all regulations and safe working practices in accordance with current legislation and as detailed in the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedure

Key Skills & Qualities

  • Tractor Driving would be an advantage.
  • PA1, PA6 would be an advantage.
  • Full clean driving license
  • Equine experience would be an advantage.
  • Strong time management and organisation
  • Reliable with an excellent attendance record
  • Flexible and able to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team player
  • Full clean driving licence required.
