Who is Doncaster Racecourse? Home to the world’s oldest classic horse race, the St. Leger, Doncaster Racecourse is a unique multipurpose venue welcoming over 500,000 guests to over 35 fixtures each year and a full events calendar hosting events such as Weddings, Conferences, Boxing, Summer Crafting, Classic Car Show, Antiques Fayres and lots more.
About the Role as a Casual Groundsperson: As a Casual Groundsperson, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining a first-class racing surface throughout the year, ensuring it meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and presentation. Working as part of a dedicated team, you’ll help care for all outdoor areas, contributing to the overall look and feel of the venue, while also supporting the upkeep of estate buildings and equipment. This is a hands-on, outdoor role where no two days are the same. You’ll be involved in everything from routine maintenance to the preparation and delivery of race days and events, helping to create an exceptional experience for participants and visitors alike.
Key Responsibilities for the successful Casual Groundsperson:
- Work under the guidance of the Clerk of the Course to deliver an effective and consistent maintenance programme.
- Prepare and reinstate the racing surface before, during, and after events, using tractors, machinery, and specialist equipment.
- Operate a range of gardening and agricultural tools, vehicles, and materials safely and efficiently.
- Maintain the highest standards across all grounds and outdoor spaces.
- Support general estate maintenance, including buildings and equipment.
- Follow all health and safety regulations and company procedures at all times.
Please note: Due to the nature of the role, flexibility is essential. You’ll be expected to work unsocial hours on a regular basis, including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays. This role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and can be physically demanding, making it ideal for someone who enjoys practical, active work.
About you as a Casual Groundsperson:
We’re looking for a reliable, motivated individual who takes pride in their work and thrives in a hands-on, outdoor environment. You’ll have excellent time management and organisational skills, a strong attendance record, and the flexibility to adapt to a varied role that includes unsocial hours. Comfortable working under pressure, you’ll communicate effectively and contribute positively as part of a team, while maintaining high standards in all conditions. You’ll enjoy working outdoors and be willing to get stuck into physically demanding tasks. A full, clean driving licence is essential, and while not required, equine experience, tractor driving experience, and PA1/PA6 certifications would be advantageous.
