Role Overview

The SEND Teacher specializing in Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) plays a critical role in raising achievement standards through innovative teaching practices.

The position involves fostering independent learning, ensuring student well‑being, and supporting the inclusion of young people both in the college and the wider community.

Main Duties

  • Prepare courses and lessons aligned with accrediting bodies and RARPA.
  • Deliver creative and engaging lessons tailored to learners with PMLD, using appropriate teaching strategies, resources, and methodologies.
  • Provide necessary teaching cover when required.
  • Lead and direct Learning Support Workers, students, and volunteers in the delivery of the curriculum.
  • Develop differentiated course content that meets accreditation standards and supports individual learner progress.
  • Regularly assess, record, and report on the development and achievements of students, in line with Awarding Body requirements and individual learning plans.
  • Maintain detailed, up‑to‑date records, including teaching files, learner tracking, and progress documentation for accreditation purposes.
  • Organize and update learner files to ensure they track progress toward learning outcomes.
  • Complete necessary documentation such as induction materials, learning plans, education reports, and review questionnaires.
  • Student Welfare and Support
  • Monitor and support the physical and emotional well‑being of students by overseeing therapies and the effectiveness of learning support staff.
  • Offer high‑quality pastoral care, acting as a personal tutor where necessary, and provide lunchtime supervision.
  • Ensure the creation of a high‑quality learning environment with stimulating displays, positive classroom settings, and recognition of each learner’s achievements.
  • Collaboration and Administration
  • Line‑manage Learning Support Assistants in your classroom team, ensuring coordinated and effective delivery of student support.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the teaching function, including reporting and coordination with other staff.

Education

  • Diploma of Higher Education (Desirable)
  • SEND‑related qualifications (Desirable)

Experience

  • Experience in teaching learners with PMLD in a SEND environment.
  • Proven ability to differentiate curriculum content to meet a variety of learner needs.

Skills and Abilities
