Commercial Manager – Highways & Bridges

Location: Bristol Contract: Permanent | Site-based Package: Competitive salary + company car + benefits

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join its Specialist Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (SBIM) contract, supporting the maintenance of some of the UK’s most significant bridge structures.

Working in partnership with National Highways, our client delivers inspection and maintenance services across the Avonmouth Bridge, Prince of Wales Bridge and Severn Bridge.

The contract includes planned maintenance, daily inspections, safety patrols and incident response to protect the structural integrity of these essential transport links.

This is an opportunity to take a key commercial role on a technically complex highways contract, combining financial oversight, client relationship management and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commercial and financial management: Work closely with Finance to manage project costs, budgets and forecasts, including Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) reporting and work in progress (WIP).
  • Change management: Assess proposed changes to works and ensure contractual notices and early warnings are submitted accurately and on time.
  • Client relationships: Build and maintain strong working relationships, supporting the resolution of commercial issues and identifying opportunities for future work.
  • Bids and estimating: Support Bid and Estimating teams by developing robust commercial solutions for strategic opportunities.
  • Team leadership: Manage and develop team members through regular performance reviews, clear objectives and ongoing support.
  • Safety and inclusion: Champion our client’s safety standards and contribute to an open, inclusive and collaborative working environment.

About You

You will bring strong commercial judgement, sound financial knowledge and the ability to manage competing priorities within a demanding project environment.

You will have

  • A degree qualification accredited by RICS, or equivalent.
  • Experience within civil engineering, ideally on highways or bridge projects.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with clients, colleagues and project teams.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
