Pension NQ Solicitor March 2027

Leading International Firm – London

Β£130K+

We have a longstanding track record of supporting pension solicitors at every stage of their careers, from newly qualified roles through to partner moves, and already this year we have assisted a significant number of trainee solicitors in securing NQ pensions positions across London and key regional cities.

The pensions legal market itself is in one of its busiest periods in years, and for anyone qualifying in March 2027 the timing could hardly be better. Most UK defined benefit schemes are now in surplus or close to it, which has shifted the agenda from plugging deficits to managing the endgame, and that in turn has driven sustained volume in buy-ins, buy-outs and longevity swaps alongside de-risking and liability management exercises. Insurer capacity has expanded markedly, and a large share of schemes are now targeting full insurance or a transfer to a consolidator or superfund, work that is technically demanding, deadline-driven and has pulled pensions teams into far closer contact with their transactional colleagues.

At the same time the regulatory pipeline keeps running hot: the Pensions Regulator's DB funding code has changed how scheme funding strategies are agreed and documented, generating bespoke funding structures, security arrangements and covenant advice, while on the DC side value for money, the consolidation of smaller schemes and the growth of master trusts continue to produce steady advisory work, and Mansion House-style reforms and the push to channel pension capital into productive assets have created a further stream of policy-driven instructions. Cross-border and corporate work has become a core part of the practice rather than a sideline, with multinational corporates needing pension input on every material transaction, M&A, capital raisings, restructurings and cross-border integration and firms with international networks picking up the benefit.

Underpinning all of this is a structural shortage of qualified specialists. The number of trainees electing pensions has not kept pace with demand, long-established practitioners have retired or moved in-house or into consultancies, and several teams that would previously have recruited at NQ level from a deep internal pool are now looking externally. The result is a market where strong NQs, and particularly those with a genuine and demonstrable interest in the practice area, attract multiple processes and competitive offers, which is precisely why firms are willing to engage specialist recruiters on an exclusive, off-market basis.

For a March 2027 qualifier the practical implication is to start early: the best NQ processes for a March qualification often begin in the autumn and winter beforehand, and off-market roles can move quickly once a partner has budget approval, so candidates who have thought about the practice area, can speak to why pensions interests them and are ready to interview at short notice consistently get the strongest outcomes.

We are now delighted to be partnering exclusively with a well-known international firm on the hire of a newly qualified pension solicitor. We have worked closely with this team for many years, supporting recruitment at a variety of levels, and know firsthand the quality of work, training and progression they offer. The role sits within a highly regarded pension group advising employers, trustees and financial institutions on the full spectrum of occupational pension scheme matters and supporting multinational corporates on pensions issues arising in cross border transactions. Work includes general advisory support on DB and DC schemes, de-risking and liability management exercises such as buy-ins, buy-outs and longevity swaps, scheme funding strategies including bespoke funding structures and security arrangements, and pensions input on corporate and finance transactions, M&A, capital raisings and restructurings. The team has a strong pipeline of exactly this kind of work, so a March 2027 qualifier would join at a point where they can take on real responsibility early, working directly with partners on live transactions and funding exercises.

As a specialist pensions recruiter, we provide clear, informed advice on the evolving private practice landscape and offer a comprehensive overview of opportunities across the City. Many of these roles are off market, reflecting the strength of our relationships and the preference of partners to take a discreet, targeted approach to team growth.
