Main duties of the job

  • Hours: Part-time - between 18-24 hours per week (will require working till 8pm two Mondays a month)
  • Measuring and recording observations (blood pressure, pulse, height/weight, etc.)
  • Administering vaccinations and B12 injections (if trained)
  • Supporting chronic disease management
  • Conducting ECGs and urinalysis
  • 24 hour blood pressure monitoring
  • Basic wound care and suture removal (if trained)
  • Assisting in minor surgery procedures
  • Health promotion and lifestyle advice

About you:

  • Previous experience as an HCA (preferably in primary care)

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY The purpose of the post is to assist the GPs and nursing team in the delivery of safe, high quality primary care services to the practice population. The post holder will undertake delegated tasks and duties under indirect supervision of members of the nursing team. This role involves a variety of clinical tasks, helping to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and excellent patient experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform phlebotomy and take blood samples
  • Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, height, weight)
  • Administer vaccinations and B12 injections (if trained)
  • Assist with chronic disease management
  • Conduct ECGs and urinalysis tests
  • Manage 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
  • Provide basic wound care and suture removal (if trained)
  • Assist in minor surgical procedures
  • Offer health promotion and lifestyle advice
  • Administrative/service support
  • Assist with management of clinical supplies e.g. monitoring stock levels, ordering, restocking of clinical areas and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in quality improvement e.g. audit, development of protocols and new services.
  • Attend practice/clinical/nurse meetings and contribute to the agenda in the development of the nursing service and where appropriate wider practice systems.

PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Complete statutory training/updating and mandatory training as specified by the practice policy.
  • Complete skills specific training and regular updating.
  • Participate in an annual individual performance review including maintaining a record own personal and professional development.
  • Take responsibility for own development, learning and performance and identify gaps in knowledge and skills.
  • Inform practice manager or registered nurse if unable to perform any aspect of role competently.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Use practice security systems according to practice guidelines.
  • Identify risks in work activities and report to registered nurse or practice manager.
  • Follow appropriate infection control procedures.
  • Maintain work areas in a tidy and safe manner.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet people's needs.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • 5 GCSEs including English and Maths
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy
  • Administration of vaccines

Experience

  • Knowledge, training and experience of HCA duties, preferably in General Practice.
  • Experience of working with the general public, preferably within a service environment.
  • Good administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work.
  • Experience of using computers, with good keyboard skills, personal skills and abilities.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of individuals, both verbally and in writing.
  • A friendly and approachable manner, with good people skills, showing care and empathy.
  • The ability to cope with occasional exposure to challenging behaviour, distressing circumstances or emotional events.
  • The ability to work positively both independently and as a member of a small team.
  • A conscientious and professional approach and the commitment to working in an adaptable and flexible manner.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake any training required to carry out the role effectively and safely.
  • The ability to give good and regular attendance.
  • Qualified to perform ECG recordings.
  • Experience of 24 hour blood pressure monitoring.
  • Basic wound care and suture removal.
  • Vaccine administration.
  • Previous experience with EMIS Web patient system however full training will be given if required.
