Main Purpose of the Position

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the HS&E Manager is responsible for the effective running of the plant HS&E department to ensure that the plant meets all of its company and legislative obligations. The role acts as a central coordinator for environmental and health & safety activity, including management systems, and is accountable for rolling out company‑wide EH&S initiatives. The manager works closely with the senior leadership team to deliver the highest quality standards, promote a positive safety culture, and ensure safety on site.

Key Objectives

  • Ensure plant compliance with all health & safety, company and legislative requirements through policies, procedures and systems.
  • Promote safe working practices and act as a role model for safety culture.
  • Stay abreast of environmental, health & safety legislation and develop robust management systems to proactively ensure compliance.
  • Translate legislative requirements into actions and integrate them across all plant personnel, visitors, contractors and temps.
  • Ensure all employees and temps receive suitable EH&S training, including site inductions.
  • Develop and progress the site annual safety plan, environmental management programme and fire safety protection plan.
  • Maintain a risk assessment programme across the site.
  • Operate within plant health & safety budget and environmental budget targets.
  • Take corrective action for equipment and operational problems to improve EH&S performance.
  • Participate in behavioural based safety program, train employees, and monitor data.
  • Conduct timely accident investigations and report findings to relevant internal and external parties.
  • Review all health, safety, environment and fire incidents and keep the Plant Manager informed.
  • Maintain and develop site accreditation status with external bodies for EH&S activities.
  • Liaise with HR to manage health issues and ensure employees are not subjected to unnecessary risks.
  • Ensure arrangements cover the absence of personnel with key EH&S responsibilities.
  • Encourage active suggestions from personnel for continuous improvement.
  • Co‑coordinate audits and ensure compliance with audit program and ISO standards.
  • Generate and maintain necessary environmental records.
  • Disseminate information on company, corporate EH&S matters and incident prevention.
  • Participate in management review process and lead multi‑disciplinary meetings.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities and ensure timely compliance.
  • Provide flexibility for non‑normal situations and participate in ad‑hoc project work.
  • Carry out instructions from the Plant Manager regarding health & safety management.
  • Manage environmental legislation topics in IMS system and liaise with environmental authorities.
  • Manage environmental audits and follow up on audit issues.
  • Manage plant energy reduction programs and sustainability programmes, ensuring timely reporting.
  • Prepare and supervise reviews of sustainability program and analyse energy consumption.

Scope of Position

Responsible for the Plant Health & Safety and Environmental budget.

Professional Requirements

Qualifications: H&S qualification with engineering background, ideally with an engineering or food technology degree.

Computer Skills: Competent in MS Office applications and SAP and QA systems including Microsoft Packages, SAP, Ena‑blon, Analyse, Prisma, Win CC, SharePoint and Infinity.

Previous Job / Project Experience: Complete production/technical knowledge of a high‑speed manufacturing environment.
