A research driven technology organisation with one of the most demanding data environments in the market is expanding its database platform team. This group builds and operates the core database services that support research, engineering and business critical systems, and they are looking for an engineer who enjoys running complex data platforms at scale.

In this role you will take ownership of production database systems, improve how they are designed, operated and automated, and work closely with engineers and researchers to ensure performance and reliability keep pace with growth. You will be joining a technically strong team that values clear thinking, high standards and practical engineering.

Responsibilities:
  • You will operate and evolve large scale database platforms, ensuring they are reliable, performant and resilient under real workloads.
  • Run and improve production deployments across on premises and AWS using technologies such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL and modern distributed database platforms.
  • Automate provisioning, upgrades, replication and monitoring using Python and infrastructure as code.
  • Tune performance, improve indexing and storage design, and remove operational bottlenecks.
  • You will improve operational visibility and monitoring so issues are detected early and fixed at the root cause rather than masked.
What you will need:
  • Strong experience running relational databases in production and a solid understanding of internals such as query execution, replication and concurrency.
  • Experience operating systems at scale, with a focus on reliability, recovery and predictable performance.
  • Confidence working on Linux and writing Python to automate operational workflows.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, deployment tooling and cloud platforms used to run production databases.
  • A mindset of ownership, long term stability and continuous improvement.

If you enjoy working close to the core of a highly technical organisation and want responsibility for database systems that genuinely matter, this role offers that opportunity.
