Job Description

We're seeking a technically excellent and genuinely personable professional for an initial 3-month contract with strong potential for permanent conversion. Your primary mission is identifying candidates with genuine technical competence and first-principles understanding, while maintaining the positive candidate experience that supports our referral-driven hiring culture.

Responsibilities

  • Distinguish real understanding from surface knowledge - separate candidates who grasp underlying concepts from those relying on memorization or AI-generated solutions
  • Identify problem-solving capability - assess whether candidates can reason through novel challenges versus only applying familiar patterns
  • Evaluate technical depth - determine if candidates have the foundational knowledge to grow and adapt in a complex fintech environment
  • Filter efficiently - make confident competence assessments quickly to protect senior engineers' time
  • Create screening questions that reveal genuine problem-solving ability and conceptual grasp
  • Track screening accuracy - how well do your competence assessments predict final hiring decisions?
  • Analyze which background indicators correlate with genuine technical competence
  • Implement 1-2 high-impact process improvements to recruiting workflow
  • Create documentation and handover materials for sustaining improvements beyond contract period

Requirements

  • Computer Science degree - essential for understanding and assessing fundamental CS concepts, algorithms, data structures, and computational thinking
  • 3+ years of software development, technical consulting, or technical assessment experience
  • Ability to quickly assess technical competence and distinguish real understanding from surface knowledge
  • Strong radar for distinguishing between candidates who grasp underlying concepts versus those relying on memorisation or AI-generated solutions
  • Strong communication skills for explaining complex concepts and providing constructive feedback

Preferred Qualifications

  • Humble and collaborative - recognizes that accurate competence assessment requires team input and continuous calibration
  • Genuinely kind - maintains positive interactions even when delivering difficult news about technical gaps
  • Team-oriented - works with engineering team to refine what 'competent enough' means for our specific needs
  • Strong communicator - explains technical concepts clearly and provides constructive feedback

Benefits & Compensation

  • 3-month total: Β£18k-24k
  • Permanent conversion potential: Β£50k-70k (negotiable based on experience level)
  • In-person role (hybrid might be possible but strong preference for in-person)
  • Work directly with engineering team to refine hiring standards
  • Opportunity to build lasting recruiting processes and systems
