About the Role
We are an early-stage drone-autonomy startup looking for a skilled maker in the Birmingham area to help design, 3D print, and assemble the physical side of our aircraft.
This is an occasional, hourly consultancy role, ideal for a freelancer or experienced tinkerer looking for flexible, hands-on hardware projects. We move fast, so we need someone who can turn concepts into flight-ready parts quickly.
🛠️ What You’ll Do
- Design and 3D print custom mounts, cases, and housings for flight controllers and sensors (and supply the raw CAD files).
- Build and assemble multirotor and fixed-wing builds, including custom electronics fitting and foam cutting.
- Repair, rebuild, and optimize existing aircraft.
- Turn rough briefs into practical, flight-ready hardware solutions without needing step-by-step instructions.
- Work from your own studio and drop finished builds off with us in Birmingham.
🎯 What We’re Looking For
- CAD proficiency (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, FreeCAD, etc.) to quickly design and iterate printable parts.
- Practical 3D printing experience (materials, print settings, structural integrity for flight).
- Hands-on drone building/repair experience, plus your own workspace and 3D printer.
- Familiarity with flying models, so your designs account for weight and centre of gravity.
- Local to Birmingham (or easy access) for regular part drop-offs.
- Self-employed status to invoice us hourly.
⭐ Nice to Have
- Basic soldering skills for custom wiring.
- Experience flying multirotors or fixed-wing drones.
- Vehicle access to help out at field test sites.
💰 What We Offer
- Competitive hourly rate set to your experience level.
- Travel expenses and consumable costs (filament, glues) covered.
- Complete schedule flexibility around your existing commitments.
