Operations Manager – Builders’ Merchant
Must have previous experience working for a Builders Merchants
Salary: Up to £50,000 DOE
Hours: Mon – Friday and alternate Saturday mornings
Operations Manager Role Purpose
The Operations Manager is responsible for the smooth and efficient day-to-day running of the branch, including transport, deliveries, yard operations, stock and administration. The role will ensure high standards of customer service, health and safety, compliance and operational efficiency.
Operations Manager Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operational activities of the branch.
- Plan and coordinate customer deliveries and transport schedules.
- Manage drivers, vehicles and external transport providers where required.
- Ensure vehicles, drivers and delivery operations meet company and legal requirements.
- Oversee yard, loading and unloading operations and maintain high standards of housekeeping.
- Support stock control, goods-in and goods-out processes.
- Deal with delivery issues, customer queries and operational problems.
- Manage branch administration, including delivery paperwork, timesheets, vehicle records and operational reports.
- Ensure all health & safety procedures are followed across the branch.
- Support the Branch Manager with staff management, training and performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs and improve customer service.
- Work closely with the sales and branch teams to ensure customer requirements are met.
Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in operations, transport, logistics or a similar role.
- Experience within a builders’ merchant.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Good knowledge of transport and delivery operations.
- Ability to manage a busy team and prioritise workloads.
- Good IT and administrative skills.
- Strong understanding of health & safety.
- Practical, hands-on approach with good problem-solving skills.
- Customer-focused and commercially aware.

To ensure the branch operates safely, efficiently and profitably, providing a reliable service to customers while supporting the Branch Manager and wider branch team.
