The Flavourist plays a key role in flavour sales growth, flavour creation, flavour production and flavour library and raw material library maintenance by working efficiently to support customer briefs while maintaining a vision of what will work best for customers and FDL. In this role, the Flavourist may extend FDL’s capabilities by utilizing a Trainee or Junior Flavourist to support initiatives and projects. The Flavourist will develop flavours and interact with customers, other flavourists, innovations technologists, production, and suppliers to ensure that goals are met and that briefs are completed in a timely manner. The Flavourist will have an extensive understanding of raw materials, finished products, production, regulatory, analytical and flavour application. The Flavourist has significant experience in their area of expertise and continues to grow in flavour development knowledge through organoleptic evaluation, experimentation, literature review and collaboration with other flavourists. This role is a 12 month Fixed Term Contract.

Key responsibilities

  • Independently develop flavours in line with business need and in response to customer brief
  • Independently lead projects
  • Proactively work with new ingredients
  • Utilize FDLs technology to deliver unique solutions to project brief
  • Participate in technical presentation to customers
  • Lead work sessions with customers
  • Train flavourist trainee
  • Compound and spray dry flavours as needed to fulfill project brief
  • Perform physical, chemical, and organoleptic testing and analysis of flavours
  • Work with analytical group on flavour matching projects
  • Employ thorough knowledge of relevant regulatory and labeling requirements for flavours
  • Work with cross functional team to optimize the strengths of FDL and deliver the best experience for our customers
  • Participate in sensory panels
  • Process raw materials and finished flavours through the different FDL systems to maintain active status
  • Work with FDL’s innovation group to create, commercialize, and produce new processed citrus ingredients
  • Know extraction, distillation, emulsion, and spray dry technologies; assist and troubleshoot in the production of these materials
  • Analyze flavours and market products for flavour duplication projects
  • Work with QC, planning, and production on issues related to citrus ingredients and finished flavours

Qualifications and skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Life Sciences, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. Additional course work or seminar in flavour creations, flavour analysis, flavour applications (preferred)
  • Minimum 7 years hands-on flavour training and creation, or Certification from the Society Of Flavour Chemists
  • Good background in organic chemistry, food chemistry, flavour applications
  • Good math skills for problem-solving calculations
  • Demonstrates strong and discerning sense of smell and taste
  • Ability to work under pressure within tight timelines
  • Accuracy
  • Flexibility to travel, sometimes at short notice
  • Willingness to learn
