Strategic Analytics is a growing team at Arch that develops innovative analytics, algorithms and AI tools to improve profitability and growth as well as providing deep analytical insight to drive decision making. To be successful, we need to develop powerful algorithms, tools and insights that give Arch a unique, competitive advantage.
As Head of Digital Algorithms you will play a crucial role in developing and overseeing algorithmic solutions which support Arch’s digital trading capabilities. You will work closely with senior stakeholders in the digital function, business unit teams and within the wider strategic analytics team to design, build and monitor algorithms which underpin digital trading across Arch Insurance’s international business. You will work with and direct other data scientists and engineers to build best-in-class digital trading tools which combine creativity, statistical rigor and business context.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day activities to design new and enhance existing digital trading algorithms.
- Guide, support, mentor and develop the work of a growing team of data scientists who will be supporting the development of digital trading capabilities.
- Work closely with business partners to understand existing approaches to underwriting and pricing and translate these into appropriate digital capabilities.
- Design and oversee the monitoring and continuous improvement of algorithmic performance.
- Discover, explore and analyse internal and external datasets for the purpose of developing appropriate digital trading algorithms.
- Collaborate in cross-functional teams and share ideas to solve complex business problems.
- Build strong partnerships with peers across the organization to support project goals and execute on the priorities set by the Head of Digital.
- Help establish best practices and repeatable processes around digital algorithm development and maintenance.
- Provide thought leadership on new, innovative techniques, approaches and software.
Skills
- Deep knowledge of a broad range of London Market lines of business and trading environment.
- Data manipulation and analytical skills in languages such as Python and SQL. Knowledge of visualization tools such as PowerBI or Sigma is a plus.
- Familiarity with cloud-based platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake and Azure is an advantage, but not essential.
- Strong coding practices which support robust algorithmic development and deployment.
- Understanding of a range of pricing approaches as well as knowledge of advanced analytical tools.
- Effective task/project management and general organization skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to convey complex concepts to technical and non-technical people across the organization as well as external partners.
- Exceptional teamwork skills required to play a key role in cross-functional teams. Ability to collaborate and build trusting relationships with business partners.
- Natural curiosity to understand the world around you and question as needed.
- Comfortable handling ambiguous concepts and breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces.
- Ability to apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
Experience
- Experience in advanced analytics roles, a significant portion of which should be in the insurance industry.
- Experience working in an analytical role within a London Market and/or digital environment is an advantage.
- Hands-on experience developing and deploying pricing models and/or trading algorithms in the London Market.
- Experience working closely with non-technical stakeholders, such as underwriting and IT.
Education
- Degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering or similar quantitative fields; or significant experience in advanced data analytics.
