The Regional Underwriting Manager is responsible for providing strategic and technical underwriting direction and leadership across multiple underwriting teams within a designated region.
This role ensures leadership of regional case and portfolio management, the consistent application of robust audit and compliance practices, and champions the professional development of underwriters under their remit.
By directing audit action plans, maintaining regulatory compliance, supporting the advancement of complex cases, and resolving regional issues, the Regional Manager protects both the integrity and quality of underwriting processes.
Furthermore, the Regional Underwriting Manager plays a critical role in supporting strategic initiatives by championing process enhancements, building strong relationships with brokers and stakeholders across the region, and contributing to project planning and budget control.
Through a blend of leadership, analytical acumen, and a commitment to continuous improvement, this role ensures that all regional underwriting teams not only uphold regulatory and internal standards but also meet business objectives and drive the organisation's growth within their region.
- Key Tasks And Responsibilities
- Audit and
- Compliance
Oversight: Responsible for conducting and coordinating branch and personal audits, ensuring completion of audit actions, reviewing failures, and maintaining compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
- Case and
- Portfolio
Management: Manages allocation, review, and progression of underwriting cases including renewals, new business, large and complex cases, LTA, CAT accumulations, and claims.
Oversees case selection, tracking, and resolution of contentious issues.
- Leadership and
Collaboration: Leads and participates in team meetings, huddles, and conferrals.
Mentors underwriters, manages authorities, supports recruitment, and fosters team communication and development.
- Reporting and
- Performance
Monitoring: Produces and analyses regular reports on rates, DA results, claims, loss ratios, and lead indicators.
Prepares presentations and updates for management and team, ensuring data-driven decision making.
- Process Improvement and
- Strategic
Initiatives: Drives process enhancements through project involvement, planning, budgeting, and broker engagement.
Supports continuous improvement by addressing survey outcomes, participating in projects, and assisting with strategic planning.
Role Requirements & Skills
Skills / Competencies
- Proven experience in audit and compliance oversight, including conducting, coordinating, and completing audits, and ensuring regulatory and internal standards are met.
- Strong knowledge of underwriting processes, with demonstrated ability to manage case and portfolio allocation, including complex and large cases, renewals, claims, and accumulation tracking.
- Analytical skills for producing, reviewing, and interpreting reports on performance metrics such as rates, claims, loss ratios, and lead indicators.
- Leadership and team management abilities, with experience leading meetings, mentoring staff, managing authorities, supporting recruitment, and fostering effective team communication.
- Process improvement mindset, with a track record of driving operational enhancements, participating in strategic projects, and implementing feedback from surveys.
- Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills, enabling effective teamwork, broker engagement, and stakeholder management.
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage multiple cases, projects, and priorities simultaneously.
- Competence in preparing management presentations and data-driven updates to support decision making and strategic planning.
- Attention to detail and ability to handle contentious or complex cases to ensure timely and effective resolution.
- Experience in budgeting, planning, and continuous improvement initiatives is highly desirable.
Qualifications
- Minimum A level standard preferred
- Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications or University Degree (or similar) desirable but not essential for the role
Experience
- Minimum 10 years relevant technical underwriting experience within insurance
