You’ll be part of our industry-leading Transmissions and Distributions teams, partnering with clients to understand their challenges and applying your expertise to solve them. As a Substation Design Engineer, you will work on engineering and construction projects mainly in industrial, transmission/distribution, and renewable sectors. You must understand complex technical, regulatory, and commercial issues and collaborate effectively with senior stakeholders.
Role accountabilities:
- Design transmission protection systems for voltages up to 400 kV.
- Review in-house and external contractor designs.
- Apply knowledge of safe electrical network design and operation, including development and construction.
- Advise on design and design change issues.
- Specialize in Electrical engineering; knowledge of other fields is advantageous.
- Experience with Construction and Design Management (CDM).
- Ensure design projects are undertaken by competent personnel and review designs by others.
- Propose, agree, and implement alternative solutions to transmission specifications and best practices.
- Deliver projects on time, within quality standards, and budget.
- Conduct site visits and non-intrusive surveys as needed.
- Identify, assess, and manage risks proactively.
- Determine the best technical solutions.
- Manage client interface, including coordination with infrastructure planners, construction teams, system operators, and stakeholders.
- Manage risk and CDM processes.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Proven experience in power system protection design/application, ideally at transmission voltage levels up to 400 kV.
- Experience preparing protection and control design deliverables, feasibility studies, reports, and cost estimates.
- Ability to calculate relay settings and prepare logic files.
- Experience working with equipment suppliers, manufacturers, and professional bodies.
- Experience in detailed electrical schematic design for substation Protection and Control systems.
- Knowledge of Busbar, Feeder, Transformer, Reactor, Circuit Breaker fail, DAR protections, and SCADA interfaces; FACTS and HVDC protection are desirable.
- Familiarity with IEC61850 communication protocols.
- Experience preparing Single Line Diagrams, Substation Layouts, Key Line Drawings, and Cable protection plans.
- Proficiency with software such as ASPEN OneLiner and ETAP.
- National Grid TP141 Protection and Settings authorization is a plus.
- Strong communication skills for complex technical and commercial issues.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and develop effective relationships.
- Excellent documentation skills.
