Role Description

As a Principal Consultant in our “Site Evaluation & Restoration” (SER) team, you will be a key member of our multi‑award winning and highly respected contaminated land and remediation business area. The team spans the UK and is integrated with a global network of over 3500 specialists and scientists delivering cutting‑edge, innovative solutions to our client’s most significant challenges. For over 17 years, Arcadis has been on the forefront of assessing and managing PFAS at contaminated land sites, drinking water catchments and through company supply chains. Arcadis has worked on over 1,000 PFAS related sites globally with a well integrated network of PFAS experts ensuring international best practice in our project and excellent opportunities for networking and personal development. Our experienced UK PFAS team provides technical leadership and delivery across the aviation, defence, industrial and water sectors with multiple high profile projects. Arcadis are also active in PFAS research and guidance development, deploying world first technologies from novel sampling techniques, analytical method development through to full‑scale remediation and water treatment systems. As awareness and regulatory pressure drives significant growth in PFAS related environmental consultancy, the Arcadis UK PFAS team is building to meet this demand and seeking experience professionals to complement our award winning team.

The Principal Consultant role will join our PFAS‑focused team in the UK SER business and be responsible for the planning, directing and supervising of works in a range of geo‑environmental settings that address the growing concern around PFAS. This will include site investigations, site and catchment scale risk assessment, remediation design and implementation, water treatment systems and the management of our client’s residual product issues such as legacy foam stocks, the decontamination of fire suppression systems and the transition to fluorine free firefighting foams.

Responsibilities

  • Support and drive the growth of the PFAS team’s portfolio of projects and clients.
  • Global & national client account support – assisting with proposals and technical reviews and maintaining our overall credibility with our existing client base, including client liaison.
  • Work to maintain the position of Arcadis as the leader in the UK and Global PFAS market including active participation in global communities of practice.
  • Lead PFAS site investigation, monitoring and remediation projects for a range of multinational clients and public sector bodies.
  • Develop and support the delivery of research projects and thought leadership pieces – articles, technical bulletins, presentations.
  • Support and deliver internal PFAS team training and technical skills development.
  • Depending on experience: Support the delivery of our foam transition service, working with industrial partners to undertake fire system decontamination services and support transition to fluorine‑free firefighting foam (F3).
  • Support the delivery of our foam fractionation wastewater treatment technology.
  • Support the delivery of our PFAS catchment conceptualisation and risk assessment service within the water sector employing bespoke digital tools.

Qualifications & Experience

  • BSc qualified in Environmental Geoscience, Chemistry, Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science or similar.
  • Higher level degrees preferred but not essential.
  • Chartered with a relevant professional body (or equivalent).
  • Driving licence.
  • We anticipate a Principal Consultant having a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience with PFAS management, for example, regulatory drivers, site assessment, chemical analysis, remediation, water and wastewater treatment and infrastructure decontamination.
  • Commercial experience (bid writing, costings, etc) preferred.
  • Experience of managing projects involving large delivery teams.
  • Proficient report writing and review skills (e.g. Phase 1 & 2 reports, remediation options appraisals and implementation plans).
  • A thorough understanding of the potential risks associated with site surveys, intrusive investigations, especially the management of health & safety.
  • Experience in client and regulatory liaison.
  • Motivation, enthusiasm and a desire to deliver exceptional outcomes.
  • Excellent attention to detail and knowledge of good data management practice.
  • Strong communication skills.

  • CL:AIRE COP Qualified Person.
  • SQP, SiLC, RSoBRA or RoGEP accredited.
  • MSc or PhD in relevant subject.
  • Academic / Trade press publication history.
