This role drives the UK&I and Global Resilience Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HS&W) strategy and agenda, taking the lead within a specialist discipline and service area. It provides professional leadership across all resilience services within the Specialist & Scientists job families, while maintaining personal competence and professional status. The position demonstrates the capability to influence both Arcadis business operations and the ongoing development of HS&W practices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying HS&W improvements that can create additional work scopes for project teams and clients, thereby ensuring compliance.
  • Actively improving HS&W culture through engagement, behaviours and expectations.
  • Bringing thought leadership to both the business and clients.
  • Focusing on cultivating insights and innovative solutions for clients and internal teams.
  • Positively leading and engaging with the HS&W agenda, embracing diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Building and consolidating strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Taking on HS&W lead roles for major projects and key clients when required.
  • Supporting risk management through independent technical reviews.
  • Investigating HS&W-related client complaints and underperforming projects.
  • Following up on review findings to drive continuous improvement.

Strategy

  • Develop country resilience HS&W Business Strategy and tactical in-year plan with UK HS&W Leadership team, in conjunction with the Global and Regional HS&W director, and Country Director and operations manager.
  • Produce and lead on the implementation plan across BA’s resilience working closely with the Sector Managing Directors, Business Directors, focused on objectives based on safety data trends.
  • Lead, direct and manage the HS&W agenda with regards to the implementation of the resilience HS&W strategy.
  • Manage interfaces with internal stakeholders including GBA’s, Enabling functions and Corporate HS&W Team.
  • Engage with BDs to support and troubleshoot HS&W issues on projects.
  • Provide technical and organisational leadership in the country Business Area.
  • Support to HS&W country manager and country director.
  • Ensure global HS&W strategy and GHSMSS is delivered consistently across the BA through the BA HS&W organization working together with the HS&W country manager and country director.
  • Facilitate cross‑business coordination within the BA and support and chair its BA HS&W Team.
  • Integrate HS&W with internal stakeholders to ensure involvement and influence in BA level processes and initiatives.
  • Motivate leadership and staff to meet HS&W goals and objectives and steward HS&W.

Culture and Behaviours

  • Encourage the right health and safety behaviours through engagement and demonstration of the Arcadis values.
  • Help develop the cultural and behavioural approach for the UK.

Delivery

  • Lead and deliver the safety agenda on large‑scale projects and key client programmes.
  • Provide specialised health and safety services to external clients where required.
  • Improve client focus to BA resilience offer approach for clients and monitor clients HS&W to stay on top of the market.
  • Identify and assess developments in the HS&W arena that may impact the BA.
  • Support coordination of HS&W responsibilities so they are assigned and understood when working for clients in BA.
  • Engage with internal or external client and all key stakeholders to develop a shared understanding of project HS&W objectives and to establish protocols for working together.
  • Support ensuring that client requirements are communicated to, and understood by, the staff of BA or client team.
  • Communicate any client requirements that may need to be considered in establishing global, GBA or national strategy and programmes.
  • Assist in ensuring that the appropriate HS&W requirements and standards are identified and implemented on projects and programmes.

Systems

  • Develop procedures and safe working practices, keeping them under review and updating where necessary to reflect changes in legislation or best practice.
  • Involved in establishing country H&S goals and objectives consistent with the Global H&S strategic direction.
  • Establish and agree to key H&S performance targets and possibly financial budgets for the in‑country H&S team in order to optimise business performance in line with set objectives.
  • Report progress on country H&S performance based on globally established goals and objectives, identifying and adjusting strategy when targets are lagging.

Risk

  • Identify hazards and risks associated with projects, ensuring that the health and safety documentation is in place to manage and control these issues.
  • Be involved in the review and identification of project H&S hazards and risks, for input in HASP and HARC at a business unit level.

Assurance

  • Undertake assurance activities to ensure H&S compliance within the Business Unit.
  • Be responsible for the completion of inspections, audits by team members, ensuring all issues are monitored, closed out and reported.
  • Prepare and attend external audits with regard to the conformance with ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 in locations certified to the standard.
  • Manage H&S issues identified by assurance activities and ensure that actions are closed and communicated across all areas.
  • Provide documentation, expertise, and advice on all H&S matters in relation to bidding and business development in the region.

Reporting

  • Develop, agree with the GBA and report on leading indicators, in line with HS&W Strategy for the project, ensuring a similar approach across the organisation.
  • Monitor SHE performance through SHE data provided and report against objectives and targets.
  • Increase cultural health and safety maturity; drive continuous improvement in all aspects of HS&W.
  • Be involved in establishing country HS&W goals and objectives consistent with the Global HS&W strategic direction.

Competence and Training

  • Be responsible for expert input and advice around Learning and Development with specific regard to resilience HS&W related course content and courses that relate to how Arcadis delivers business.

Innovation

  • Work collaboratively with other consultants, contractors and government regulators to roll out leading‑edge developments and best practice.
  • Be responsible for identifying and delivering initiatives and campaigns that will support activities and promote health and safety.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Graduate professional status, or equivalent.
  • NEBOSH Diploma.
