Role description
Our Intern & Placement programme provides hands-on insight into the work we do and helps develop skills and knowledge within your chosen field. Supported by signposted training, the programme blends technical training with personal and professional development while with us. You will be exposed to real projects and clients and gain a range of experiences over the 10–12 week internship or 12 month placement.
Role accountabilities
Our civil engineering teams work across highways, rail, energy, and water to deliver safe, high-quality, sustainable design solutions. As a graduate, you will be supported and mentored while contributing to projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments. You will work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams and follow a structured path towards professional qualification. You will design infrastructure using advanced software and digital tools and may assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will learn about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints, while collaborating with other disciplines and attending site visits to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable. You will engage with clients and stakeholders and experience all stages of project delivery—from concept to construction—on UK and international projects.
- As a civil engineer in highways and transportation, you will help shape the future of transport infrastructure with safe, sustainable, and innovative solutions. You may design foundations, earthworks, retaining structures or drainage systems using tools like Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM. You may explore generative design and transport planning, traffic modelling, and policy alignment.
- A water management engineer works on waste and clean water infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets to deliver sustainable solutions.
- As a civil engineer in rail, you will design and deliver infrastructure that supports the railway network, collaborating across disciplines in a safety-critical environment and using latest digital tools.
- An energy engineer supports clients in delivering new connections and grid upgrades to help meet Net Zero carbon reduction ambitions.
No matter the sector, the programme offers opportunities to grow your skills in delivering sustainable solutions. Some site work visits and inspections are involved.
Qualifications & Experience
- You will be working towards a degree in a relevant subject
- You will demonstrate Arcadian skills including resilience, creativity, analytical thinking, and teamwork
- You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to influence and consult with stakeholders
- Willing to travel and stay away from home when required (virtual working may be embraced where possible)
