This programme provides hands-on experience, technical training, and professional development through real projects and clients, with a 10–12 week internship or 12 month placement.
Role description and accountabilities are designed to give you exposure to real project work, signposted training, and a pathway toward professional qualification. You will work with multidisciplinary teams, visit sites, and contribute to safe, buildable, and sustainable designs.
Role accountabilities
Our civil engineering teams work across highways, rail, energy, and water, delivering safe, high-quality, and sustainable design solutions for clients and communities. You will be supported and mentored while contributing to projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments. You will work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams and follow a structured path towards professional qualification.
Using advanced software and digital tools, you will design new infrastructure and assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will gain hands-on experience across sectors, learning about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints, while collaborating with other disciplines and attending site visits to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable. You will help deliver resilient, low-carbon solutions and maximise environmental, social and economic impact.
Work varies across sectors and project scales, including highways and transportation, water, rail, and energy. You will engage with clients and stakeholders and contribute to all stages of project delivery from concept to construction, on UK and international projects.
- Highways & Transportation: design safe, sustainable solutions for roads, junctions, bridges, and active travel routes; use tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM; consider generative design and highway resilience; exposure to transport planning, traffic modelling, and policy alignment.
- Water: work on waste and clean water infrastructure and related assets to deliver sustainable solutions for resilient water supplies.
- Rail: contribute to station infrastructure, bridges, utility crossings, drainage, and safety-critical components; collaborate across disciplines to meet rail standards and health & safety requirements; gain experience across UK and international rail projects including light rail and tram systems.
- Energy: support clients in delivering new connections and grid upgrades to help meet Net Zero carbon reduction ambitions.
Some site visits and inspections will be part of the role. The programme is an opportunity to grow skills in delivering sustainable solutions across sectors.
Qualifications & experience
- You will be working towards a degree in a relevant subject

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to use technical knowledge to influence and consult stakeholders
- Willing to travel and stay away from home when required (virtual working is embraced where possible)
