As an Innovation Engineer, you will play a key role in our newly formed Research & Development team within Digital Services, helping us identify and test new ways to improve how we work and the services we provide. You will join a collaborative and forward‑thinking team where curiosity is encouraged, ideas are valued and responsible innovation is central to everything we do.
In this role, you will focus on researching, experimenting with and prototyping emerging technologies, with a strong emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and Microsoft‑based solutions. Working closely with the Innovation Engineering Manager and colleagues across Digital Services, IT, legal, and compliance, you will explore practical applications for new tools and approaches, assess their feasibility and impact, and help shape ideas before they’re handed over to delivery teams. This is a hands‑on role, combining technical experimentation with collaboration, documentation, and clear communication.
Responsibilities- Researching and experimenting with emerging technologies, particularly AI and Microsoft‑based platforms
- Building proofs of concept and prototypes to demonstrate the potential of new tools and ideas
- Assessing technical feasibility, business value, security and regulatory considerations
- Contributing to our technology radar and innovation backlog
- Working closely with stakeholders to ensure alignment with governance and regulatory requirements
- Producing clear documentation, including adoption kits, to support handover into delivery teams
- Supporting initiatives that drive automation, efficiency, and infrastructure optimisation
- Promoting a culture of experimentation, learning, and responsible innovation across the business
You will be a technically capable and naturally curious individual, motivated by exploring new tools, learning quickly and turning ideas into tangible outcomes. You are comfortable working independently and you also enjoy collaborating with others and communicating technical concepts in a clear, accessible way.
Qualifications- A strong understanding of the Microsoft ecosystem, including Power Platform, Azure and Microsoft 365, with practical experience of tools such as Azure Logic Apps, Azure Storage, Azure Foundry, Azure Communication Services, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure AI Search, Microsoft Copilot Studio and GitHub Copilot
- Hands‑on experience with low‑code/no‑code tools and automation
- Practical experience applying AI technologies, such as GenAI or AI‑driven augmentation, with exposure to AI harness tools like Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and other emerging agent or developer tools, such as OpenAi Agent Builder, CoPilot Workflows; personal AI projects or experimentation with local LLMs would be especially valuable.
- Experience working with data using SQL and/or Python
- Confidence using tools such as GitHub to support prototyping and integration testing
- Awareness of working in a regulated UK environment, with an understanding of FCA, PRA or SRA considerations
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
You may also bring experience or interest in areas such as machine learning or NLP, infrastructure optimisation, cloud security and governance, Design Thinking, Agile and innovation frameworks, or wider experimentation with emerging AI tools and personal side projects.
