Quantity Surveyor / Estimator Role Description
This is a full-time, hybrid Quantity Surveyor / Estimator role based in Scotland working across the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for both pre-construction cost estimation and ongoing commercial project management, from initial estimates through to final accounts. The role ensures projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining high quality standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing accurate cost estimates for glazing and facade projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services
- Reviewing drawings, specifications, and architectural plans to perform take-offs and build-ups
- Preparing and reviewing Bills of Quantities (BOQs), cost plans, and competitive quotations
- Preparing and issuing enquiries to supply chain for pricing
- Procuring and appointing subcontractors / suppliers
- Negotiating with main contractors & subcontractors on contractual terms and conditions
- Projection of monthly cash flow figures, monthly reporting of contract sales and liabilities to the Directors
- Maintain contract administration, monitoring ongoing project costs, preparing cost reports, forecasting expenditure and identifying and tracking pricing variations
- Liaising with project managers, engineers, suppliers, and clients to gather information and provide commercial advice
- Supporting procurement, assessing project risks, managing subcontractor accounts, and navigating contract variations
- Updating cost databases and tracking bid progress to ensure consistent commercial accuracy throughout the project lifecycle
Skills
- Strong cost estimating and management skills, including take-offs, cost planning, and preparation of quotations and BOQs
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and architectural plans
- Proficient in Excel and common estimating/commercial software
- Experience in construction or glazing projects (facades, cladding, or building envelopes preferred)
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
- Well-organised with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines
- Knowledge of contracts, commercial processes, and risk management
Qualifications:
- Relevant technical qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline
- Candidates should have a full UK driving licence due to the frequent UK travel requirements of the role
