- Assistant Underwriter β Commercial Motor Fleet Insurance
- About AR Experts Ltd
AR Experts Ltd is a Manchester-based technology company building Saa S platforms, AI solutions, hardware-integrated products and enterprise software , including the Biz Align ecosystem for fleet management, telematics, workforce and business operations.
We are developing Biz Align Insur Tech , a technology-driven insurance platform initially focused on UK commercial motor fleet insurance, particularly courier, delivery, rental and other fleet-based businesses.
The platform combines insurance operations with our own telematics technology, using information such as driver behaviour, speeding, harsh braking and acceleration, mileage, night-time driving, vehicle health, maintenance records, tamper alerts, theft-related activity, crash detection and FNOL data to support risk assessment, underwriting, claims handling, risk management and potential premium improvements.
We are developing the business as a Managing General Agent and are establishing the appropriate regulatory, underwriting, capacity, compliance and operational arrangements.
About the Role
We are looking for an Assistant Underwriter to support the assessment of commercial motor fleet risks and the day-to-day underwriting operation, working under the supervision of senior underwriters and within agreed authority and risk appetite.
Alongside the core underwriting work, you will help shape the underwriting guidelines, question sets, rating factors and referral criteria that the platform is being built around, and work with our claims, telematics, product and engineering teams to turn connected-vehicle data into practical underwriting decisions.
It is a genuinely unusual seat: the underwriting rules you help write become the software we ship.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the assessment of commercial motor fleet risks under the supervision of senior underwriters.
- Review proposal forms, fleet schedules, driver information, claims histories, vehicle details, usage, geography, operational activity and available telematics data.
- Assist with quotations, underwriting referrals, policy endorsements, renewals, mid-term adjustments, cancellations and policy administration.
- Check that applications and supporting documents are complete and accurate before they progress.
- Refer risks falling outside the assigned authority or agreed risk appetite to the senior underwriter, insurer or capacity provider.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records, referral notes, audit trails and decision documentation.
- Help develop underwriting guidelines, question sets, rating factors, acceptance rules, referral criteria and decline rules.
- Support portfolio monitoring, claims-trend analysis, renewal reviews, risk accumulation monitoring, management information and bordereaux preparation.
- Work with the claims, telematics, product and engineering teams to identify connections between driving behaviour, vehicle usage, incidents, claims and loss performance.
- Help assess how telematics data can support risk selection, pricing, fraud detection, accident prevention, theft recovery and renewal decisions.
- Translate underwriting policies and insurance processes into clear workflows and requirements for the Biz Align Insur Tech development team.
- Help test quote, referral, bind, policy issuance, endorsement, renewal, cancellation, FNOL, claims-notification and reporting workflows.
- Participate in discussions with senior underwriters, brokers, capacity providers, compliance advisers, claims partners and MGA software providers.
- Support regulatory-readiness, underwriting governance, documentation, Consumer Duty, data protection and treating-customers-fairly activities under appropriate supervision.
- Handle confidential customer, commercial, claims and insurance information securely.
- Undertake relevant professional learning and work towards appropriate insurance or underwriting qualifications where required.
- Required Skills & Experience
- Experience as an Assistant Underwriter, Underwriting Assistant, Insurance Technician, Commercial Motor Handler, Fleet Insurance Administrator, Broker Support Executive, or in a similar role.
- Knowledge of commercial motor, fleet, courier, delivery, hire-and-reward, vehicle rental or related insurance products.
- Understanding of quotation, risk assessment, referral, binding, policy issuance, mid-term adjustments, renewals, cancellations, claims and bordereaux.
- Ability to interpret claims histories, fleet schedules, driver information, underwriting criteria and risk data.
- Strong numerical, analytical, documentation, communication and organisational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both insurance professionals and software-development teams.
- Willingness to contribute within an early-stage, technology-led MGA environment where underwriting processes and systems are still being developed.
- CII qualification, or demonstrable progress towards a relevant qualification.
- Experience working within an MGA, insurer, broker or delegated-authority environment.
- Familiarity with FCA-regulated insurance environments and Consumer Duty.
- Experience with capacity providers, bordereaux, claims systems, insurance platforms or delegated underwriting arrangements.
- Knowledge of telematics-based insurance, connected-vehicle data, data analysis or insurance product development.
