Aquifer Energy is seeking an experienced Principal or Senior Hydrogeologist to support our growing portfolio of renewable energy and water resource projects from our Lichfield Office. This role will contribute to the development of open- and closed-loop ground source heat pump systems, water resource assessments, and a wide range of geological and hydrogeological projects across the UK.

We are looking for a driven professional with a strong grounding in UK Environment Agency, SEPA & NRW legislation, proven experience in hydrogeological investigation, and proficiency with GIS and groundwater modelling tools. Experience or interest in thermogeology and ground source heating technologies is highly advantageous.

This position offers the opportunity to work on innovative, environmentally focused projects that influence sustainable energy and water resource management nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct hydrogeological assessments, including field investigations and site data collection.
  • Analyse groundwater flow, quality, and sustainability using advanced numerical and analytical modelling tools.
  • Apply GIS platforms (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) to map, visualise, and interpret hydrogeological and geological datasets.
  • Undertake site-based tasks such as water features surveys, drilling supervision, and thermal response testing.
  • Conduct site based water quality sampling to determine chemical parameters and water quality.
  • Develop skills and technical understanding in thermogeology and ground source heat pump systems.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, datasets, and visualisations for clients and regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with regulators including the EA, NRW, and SEPA, as well as other external stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver hydrogeological impact assessments.
  • Maintain and calibrate field equipment, applying practical mechanical understanding as required.
  • Review technical work produced by colleagues to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Manage project timelines, client expectations, and deliverables effectively.
  • Contribute to research and innovation in water resource management and low-carbon energy solutions.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Chartered status (e.g., CGeol, CEng, CIWEM) for Principal Hydrogeologist with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience and working toward chartership for Senior Hydrogeologist.
  • Full UK driving licence required.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience with UK hydrogeological regulation and permitting.
  • Right to work in the UK (visa sponsorship not available).
