Overall Purpose of the Role: Responsible for the day-to-day commercial management of an assigned portfolio of multi-utility projects. The role covers the full project commercial cycle from cost reporting and variation management through to client valuations and final accounts and requires an individual who can operate with increasing independence, take clear ownership of their project portfolio, and build effective working relationships with clients and internal teams. You will be involved in building and maintaining strong working relationships with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders to support successful project outcomes.

What you will be doing:

  • Prepare and submit weekly and monthly cost/value reconciliations (CVRs) and Project P&L reports, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Identify, prepare, and submit client variations, providing clear commercial justification and following through to agreement and payment in a timely manner.
  • Prepare client valuations on a regular basis and manage the submission, agreement, and payment process through to receipt.
  • Liaise with design, operations, and finance teams to report and manage the commercial performance of schemes within your portfolio.
  • Attend monthly operational performance meetings, presenting commercial performance data and taking accountability for the financial position on your projects.
  • Manage client debt on assigned projects, monitoring aged debt, pursuing outstanding payments, and maintaining strong working relationships with clients throughout.
  • Prepare and agree final accounts for both clients and subcontractors, ensuring all commercial entitlement is captured and agreed within reasonable timescales.
  • Support subcontractor cost management on assigned projects, including checking applications, processing payments, and flagging cost exposure to your line manager.
  • Conduct site visits as required to assess progress, validate commercial positions, and ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with Aptus commercial procedures, policies, and relevant industry regulations across all assigned projects.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organised project commercial records and files in line with departmental requirements.
  • Support Commercial colleagues on larger or more complex projects as directed, contributing to wider team commercial delivery.

What we ask from you:

  • Demonstrable experience in a commercial or QS role within utility construction, civil engineering, or a related contracting environment.
  • Working knowledge of cost reporting, variation management, and contract administration processes.
  • Competent understanding of client valuations, final accounts, and subcontractor cost control.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, with Excel at intermediate user level as a minimum.
  • Good communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of projects simultaneously, with sound organisational and time management skills.
  • Candidates may hold a relevant degree qualification or have developed their competency through vocational experience β€” both routes are considered.
  • A full UK Driving Licence

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience within the utilities sector (gas, electric, water, or multi-utility).
  • Familiarity with NEC or JCT contract forms, even at a basic administrative level.
  • HNC, HND, degree, or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Working towards or considering professional membership with RICS, CIOB, or equivalent body.
  • Experience using commercial management or project cost software.
